‘Delta is out there’

THE Delta variant is out there, but with schools having reopened from lockdowns already and having had to learn how to protect students and staff from the Covid threat, they aren’t facing an unknown enemy this time. Principal of St Conaire’s in Shannon is Peter Walsh and he said that the guidelines are well established now. “The Department have issued the information and we’re following all that, we have the template from last year, we’re following that and getting on with it. We’re doing all the sanitising, everyone is used to that now, we’ll do the best we can. The staff are very good and they’re well used to it, we’ll see how it goes.” While there is some familiarity around Covid now, he doesn’t feel that schools will be as relaxed when they reopen as they would have been pre March 2020. “No, I don’t think the stress is gone out of it. You’re depending on the community monitoring …

Shannon kickboxer Liam on top of the world after Birmingham win

SHANNON kickboxer Liam Alford forced a stoppage of previously undefeated UK fighter Qasim Beg on Sunday in Birmingham taking the IKF, WKO, WRSA, ICO and WKA super lightweight world titles. Liam is trained by Howie Vincent, a huge figure in Shannon kickboxing, who said he was overjoyed with the victory, which he said was an upset comparable to boxing heavyweight Anthony Joshua’s defeat to Andy Ruiz two years ago. “Over the moon! In the kickboxing world it’d be the equivalent of when Anthony Joshua lost to Ruiz, that’s how big it is in the world that we compete in. This lad was 49-0 from amateur to pro, never lost a fight. Absolutely over the moon.” It was a nightmare for the fighter known as ‘The Dream’ and Howie said he had known the upset was very possible. “As I said at press conference over there, we wouldn’t have taken it if we weren’t confident. Yes we knew what we were …

Optimism over Lufthansa Technik sale

SOURCES say it looks increasingly likely that Lufthansa Technik will be sold, rather than restructured or closed down.  The company are understood to still be in discussions with an interested party, as talks aimed at agreeing a sale continue.  While at one time the company had expected to make a decision on the Shannon plant’s future by mid July, there is still some uncertainty nearly a month later, but there is optimism that the discussions will ultimately bear fruit. Lufthansa Technik Shannon,  employs around 500 people, but has seen its operations hit very hard by the pandemic. It  specialises in the overhaul of short- and medium-range aircraft. New Ryanair deal a huge step on road to recovery

Budget airline’s CEO has harsh words for government over aviation recovery policy RYANAIR launched eight new Shannon routes last Thursday morning and said it will carry more passengers to and from the airport over the next year than it did in 2019, before Covid struck. The airline’s CEO Eddie Wilson praised Shannon Airport’s management for being proactive in securing new services, and estimated around one million people will fly with Ryanair to and from Shannon in the next 12 months, up by around 25% on the 2019 figure. It announced six new services for the winter 2021 season, to London-Luton, Budapest, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Fuerteventura and Turin. New services already in place for the summer include Corfu and Gran Canaria. While there has been some criticism of Shannon’s separation from the other State airports in recent times, Mr Wilson said the deal wouldn’t have been possible had it still been part of the DAA group, with Dublin and Cork. “You have …

Shannon-Heathrow to resume next month

CORK’S difficulty is Shannon’s opportunity as Aer Lingus has announced it will resume a daily Heathrow service there next month. It is happening because of the closure of the runway at Cork airport. While the resumption is certainly very welcome, there will only be one service a day in operation, compared to the three daily services pre-pandemic. However with recovery in the aviation sector likely to be slow, the resumption is certainly a step in the right direction. In a statement Aer Lingus said, “Due to the closure of the runway at Cork Airport, a daily Aer Lingus service from Shannon to London Heathrow will commence on September 13, and it is intended to operate for the duration of the period of the closure of the runway at Cork Airport. The aircraft and crew operating the service will be based in Dublin.” From September 13 Heathrow flights will leave Shannon at 5pm each day. The Shannon bound flights will depart …

‘Leap of faith’ on new Shannon venture is hailed

CLARE had some positive economic news lately, when OLED Material Manufacturing Limited and PPG combined to create 100 jobs in Shannon, taking the former Avara site in Shannon. Formerly of Roche in Clarecastle, Gerry Cahill is now the PPG Plant Manager for Shannon, as preparations begin for manufacturing. While there is a long and very successful history of US companies coming to Ireland, he says it was very complex during a pandemic, with the whole thing having to be arranged virtually. “One of the biggest challenges was the purchase of the site without ever physically being on the site. These guys have made quite a leap of faith. They’re currently leasing the site and early next year they’ll buy it. “Until last week, no one from either PPG or UDC had been on the site, it was all done virtually. The second biggest challenge is that the site had been closed down for a year. We’re starting to reactive systems, …

Do Not Consume Notice issued for part of the Shannon/Sixmilebridge Public Water Supply

FOLLOWING consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE), Irish Water, working in partnership with Clare County Council, has issued a Do Not Consume Notice for consumers on the Shannon/Sixmilebridge Public Water Supply due to elevated levels of manganese. The notice applies to approximately 7,500 customers and is effective immediately. It does not apply to customers in Shannon, Newmarket-on-Fergus and Bunratty. It is especially important that mains drinking water is not given to bottle fed infants. Please note this is not a Boil Water Notice. Boiling the water will not reduce manganese levels and is therefore not a suitable measure to make the water safe to consume. This notice does not apply to other water schemes in County Clare. Tankered water will be in place at the following locations to provide an alternative water supply to customers. Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tanker and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure. …

Widespread anger about Shannon masterplan claims councillor

LAST week’s meeting of Shannon Municipal District heard criticism of the new draft masterplan for Shannon Town Centre, and a request that the deadline for submissions on it be extended. Very close to the outset of the meeting independent Councillor Gerry Flynn made the call for the time for submissions to be extended. He said that just the previous day the county development plan had been pushed back for seven months, because there hadn’t been adequate consultation due to Covid-19. Putting the deadline back for the Shannon masterplan is necessary, he said, with local people unhappy about the level of consultation. “There is widespread anger in the community because they haven’t had proper engagement.” After Jason Murphy of the Council’s executive said he would run the request by Brian McCarthy of the Council’s planning section, Councillor Flynn said this would not be adequate. “This is something for the Chief Executive to decide on.” Councillor Flynn said he had put forward …
