RYANAIR launched eight new Shannon routes on Thursday morning and said it will carry more passengers to and from the airport over the next year than it did in 2019, before Covid struck. The airline’s CEO Eddie Wilson praised Shannon Airport’s management for being proactive in securing new services, and estimated around one million people will fly with Ryanair to and from Shannon in the next 12 months, up by around 25% on the 2019 figure. It announced six new services for the winter 2021 season, to London-Luton, Budapest, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Fuerteventura and Turin. New services already in place for the summer include Corfu and Gran Canaria. AER Lingus staff being laid off at Shannon are set to have a virtual meeting with An Taoiseach Michéal Martin, this Thursday. In a statement this Wednesday, Clare TD Cathal Crowe said, “The meeting which I have organised to take place between An Taoiseach and Aer Lingus cabin crew based at Shannon Airport will now happen at 3:30pm this Thursday. Aer Lingus cabin crew will nominate four people to represent them at the meeting. “The meeting will be conducted via video call and TDs and Senators from the Mid-West will not attend. Protocol would require all or none us to be invited. “With no politicians in attendance, apart from An Taoiseach, the voices of Aer Lingus personnel will be in full focus.” Last week there was good news for Aer Lingus staff as the airline announced it would not be laying off its staff at Cork Airport temporarily, while upgrade works happen, and Deputy Crowe said Aer Lingus should reconsider …

Ballycasey Property Developments Ltd has lodged a planning application for 14 two-storey dwellings at Dun Aras Avenue, in the Hurlers Cross area of Shannon. Three of the houses would be two-beds, while ten would be three-bed and there would be one four-bedroom house. Thirty five car parking spaces would be provided with the houses. At the moment the site is waste ground, according to the application. A description of the proposed development identifies the 0.82 hectare site and states the scheme would comprise 14 two-storey dwellings facing onto Dun Aras Avenue, but with vehicular access to the rear. “There are five house types, ranging from two bed to four bedroom in size. THE Ulster Bank branch in Shannon is one of 25 that are set to be acquired by Permanent TSB, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two, writes Owen Ryan. The deal will see Permanent TSB acquire in the region of €7.6 billion worth of assets. THE new Draft Shannon Town Centre Masterplan proposes developing a main street for the town, to the front of SkyCourt, with an ‘Innovation District’ on the other side of the road. The new document says, “Shannon Town Centre has been the heart of Shannon Town since the 1970s, but despite its range of retail and community services, it lacks definition and the sense of place found in other Irish towns and villages. “This masterplan vision aims to give it that definition, by managing future growth and establish a place that captures and secures the benefit of growth for the local community. “Shannon has been a place of innovation and promoting a healthy lifestyle since its inception, yet its town centre has never been the source of pride that Shannon deserves. “This masterplan vision is an attempt to improve the local townscape with new retail, community, housing, and public spaces for locals and visitors to enjoy.” Regarding the innovation area, it …

UNIVERSAL Display Corporation and PPG have today announced that OLED Material Manufacturing Ltd and PPG are embarking on a multi-million-euro capital investment that is expected to create up to 100 high-tech jobs at a new Shannon manufacturing site. The facility, which was announced in February 2021, will broaden the global footprint and increase the production of Universal Display Corporation’s (UDC) energy-efficient, high-performing UniversalPHOLED® materials to meet growing organic light emitting diode (OLED) market demand and evolving industry requirements. LAST Christmas Wynona Grant completed a 12-hour run, raising €3,000 for charity and later this year she has another extreme challenge planned. Living in central Dublin, it is about 240km to her family home at Ballycasey. Her plan is to run all this distance over four to five days in December, raising funds for the Make A Wish Foundation Ireland It will be a huge physical, mental and logistical challenge, which she is calling ‘Running Home for Christmas’ and it will only be possible after months of preparation are complete. A runner can’t just take off down the M7, so Wynona is going to have to find the path she feels suits best. “I’ll be running through towns, but I’ve yet to decide the exact route. It’s likely to be Dublin to Kildare Town, Kildare Town to Mountrath, from there it’s looking like Nenagh, then Limerick and then Shannon.” Already she has got some very helpful support through car sharing …

Carrier refuses to attend labour court and defends package available to laid off staff AER Lingus has refused to attend a Labour Court hearing on the closure of its Shannon cabin crew base. The matter was referred to the Labour Court by trade union Fórsa, after the two sides failed to reach agreement on staff transfers and redundancy terms. Last week management wrote to the Shannon cabin crew, telling them to transfer to Dublin or Cork, or alternatively opt for redundancy. The airline also wrote to the Labour Court and said that there was no point in it engaging, as it wouldn’t be able to offer anything further. “The purpose of this letter is to inform you that Aer Lingus is not in a position to participate in the proposed hearing on these matters.
