Irish Water has confirmed that 61% of customers are now paying water charges at the end of the third billing cycle compared to 55% at the end of the second cycle and 44% at the end of the first billing cycle. 928,000 customers have now paid part or all of their bills, an increase of 98,000 customers who began paying charges for the first time in the past three months. Total revenue from charges paid to date by domestic customers is €110.8m. Revenue received during the third billing cycle was €42.3m,an increase from €38m in the second billing cycle and €30.5m in the first billing cycle. In an intelligence-led operation, Revenue officers seized €8,700 from a Polish man at Shannon Airport on Monday. The seizure was made when the man, in his thirties, was stopped and questioned by Revenue officers prior to boarding a flight to Krakow. Officers seized the cash in accordance with proceeds of crime legislation and were granted a three month detention order today (Tuesday) by Judge Patrick Durcan at Ennis District Court to facilitate further investigations.

CLARE gardaí, the Criminal Assets Bureau and Revenue are to be involved in a multi-agency response to deal with local families and individuals who have unaccountable wealth and are “obviously involved in criminality”. Chief Superintendent John Kerin, head of the Clare Garda Division, said a lack of garda investment over a five or six-year period during the recession prevented a long-term strategic approach to investigating these families and individuals. Officers from Revenue’s Customs Service seized a quantity of offensive weapons following a search, under warrant, of a private residence near Kilmihil today (Tuesday). The operation was conducted following an investigation into the attempted importation of a number of stun guns through the postal system. The weapons seized included stun guns, nunchucks, knuckle dusters, extendable batons, a flick knife and an air pistol. In an intelligence-led operation this morning (Monday) officers from Revenue’s Customs Service seized 30,060 cigarettes with a retail value of approximately €15,000 and a car in Ennis. The cigarettes were seized following the execution of search warrants at a private house and a business premises in Ennis. Revenue’s tobacco detector dog Harvey gave a positive reaction to packages and boxes found to contain cigarettes. Brands seized include West, Winston Slims, Rothmans Slims and Marlboro. A Russian man in his thirties was questioned by officers from Revenue’s Customs Service and the investigation is ongoing with a view to prosecution. The seizure was made as a result of routine profiling when officers from Revenue’s Customs Services at Shannon Airport discovered 18kgs of roll your own tobacco with a retail value of approximately €7,000. The “Amber Leaf” tobacco was discovered in the luggage of an Irish male who had arrived on a flight from Tenerife. Investigations are ongoing and a file is being prepared with a view to a prosecution. The seizure represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of €5,800. This is assuming that it would have displaced the equivalent full tax paid quantity of cigarettes and tobacco. REVENUE received about 10,000 calls to the LPT helpline this Monday morning, a huge proportion of which related to arrears of the Household Charge. Property owners seem now to be acting on the fact that the Household Charge, which was initially €100 and increased to €200 last July, will only increase further to €213 by the end of April if it is ignored. Given the significant number of property owners who have not complied with the 2012 Household Charge and the volume of calls received this morning, the Revenue Commissioners have decided to extend the deadline until close of business Wednesday evening The LPT helpline (1890 200 255) is open from 8am to 8pm today and tomorrow and 8am to 5pm on Wednesday. THE Freight Transport Association of Ireland (FTA Ireland), has welcomed the announcement by the UK and Ireland governments that they are to introduce a marker that will help tackle fuel fraud. This has to be good news to help reduce fuel laundering,” the organisation general manager, Neil McDonnell said. The product will be used to mark rebated fuels, including the off-road diesel commonly known in the UK as ‘red diesel’, in a move that will boost both countries’ fight against illegal fuel laundering. The marker will help HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the Irish Revenue Commissioners tackle the criminal market in off-road diesel, marked with a red dye in the UK and green in Ireland, and also kerosene primarily used for heating oil.
