A TOTAL of 68 new confirmed Covid-19 cases have been reported today (Sunday, August 9) to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC). No additional deaths have been reported today. There are no new cases relating to this county. The Health Service Executive’s (HSE’s) Covid-19 tracker puts the number of confirmed cases in Clare at 403 to-date. According to the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), there have now been a total of 1,772 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland. TODAY’S rate of confirmed cases of Covid-19 is 174, according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC). Clare is among the counties to record increases in the number of positive cases. Seventeen of the cases confirmed today are spread between Clare and 12 other counties (Carlow, Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Mayo, Roscommon, Tipperary, Wexford and Wicklow). 110 cases are located in Kildare, 27 in Dublin, 7 in Cork, 7 in Offaly, 6 in Meath, the HPSC said. The latest Department of Health Data puts the number of confirmed cases in Clare currently at 401. The figures issued this evening (August 8) also show that one patient diagnosed with Covid-19 in this country has died, bringing the death toll to a total of 1,772. PUBLICANS in Clare have reacted positively to news that pubs will be allowed to open three weeks earlier than planned, but have voiced concern that the two metre social distancing rule will force some rural pubs to remain closed. Under the accelerated road map unveiled by government last Friday, so-called “wet pubs,” which don’t serve food, can open for business from July 20. Pubs serving food may re-open, along with the rest of the hospitality sector, from June 29. While the news has been welcomed by organisations representing the trade, there is broad agreement that the two metre social distancing rule could mean smaller pubs face closure for the foreseeable future. CHAMPIONS are needed in every family and parish across the county in order to win the battle against the coronavirus, according to the CEO of Clare County Council. Making an appeal to the public to continue to stick to government guidelines and to avoid complacency, as Ireland sets out on the road to re-opening, Pat Dowling also thanked the public for their efforts to-date. “We are very grateful for all of the sacrifices everyone has made,” he said. “We understand that there can be slippage and fatigue, but we must continue to comply, and to adapt in order to survive. DESPITE the phased re-opening of inland fisheries around the region, some in the Clare angling community believe that it could be 2021 before any major competitions can go ahead. Last week, on advice from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) re-opened their facilities, with the exception of those in Galway and on the Moy. The ESB also re-opened fisheries, including those on the Shannon. In line with the NPHET road map for the reopening of the country, anglers can currently access waterways with 5km of their homes. From next Monday, angling in groups of up to four will be permitted. From June 8, subject to targets that underpin the road map, people will be allowed to travel 20km. At all stages of the re-opening, people must comply with social distance guidelines.
