Election battle begins as Clare Fianna Fáil squares up to Sinn Féin

The gloves have finally come off ahead of the June 7 local election with a high-profile Fianna Fáil member yesterday accusing Sinn Féin of putting forward candidates who don’t have a “serious chance” just to have a candidate running in every area. Fianna Fáil director of elections for Clare, Gerry Reidy, said that while Tommy Guilfoyle (SF) and Donna McGettigan (SF) were strong candidates, he “wouldn’t be threatened” by the other candidates put forward by Sinn Féin. Responding to this suggestion, Sinn Féin’s director of elections for Clare, Finbarr MacGabhann, said that the party didn’t field candidates “for the craic”. He also said that it was Mr Reidy’s job to “come up with stories” about rival parties. Ennis councillor Johnny Flynn to leave politics and will not contest the local election in June.

Ennis councillor Johnny Flynn (FG) has made the surprise announcement he is to leave the political arena and will not contest the local election in June. “Coming up to an election, all politicians have to consider their position and with the election looming I had to consider it, and decided to give other candidates an opportunity.” He contacted his fellow councillors to tell them his decision over the weekend. And now he has made the announcement, many members of the public have thanked him for his service over the last after 20 years. “It is all about the constituents rather than the politicians really,” he said.
