As preparations get underway for the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival, Willie Daly says, “I know a lot of people have gone computerised on things like Plenty of Fish but there’s nothing like the real thing. When these guys are out dancing and they have an arm around a woman and feel the lovely softness of a woman and hold her hand, there’s a saying that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. It is very hard to beat the real thing.” The festival kicks off a little later than usual on September 3 but with it running until October 9, there will be plenty of opportunities for those looking for love. LISDOONVARNA and September go hand in hand in terms of colour, music and craic, but the Spa town also had a great festival atmosphere for this St Patrick’s weekend. In fact the North Clare town stole a march on the rest of the country by staging its annual parade on Saturday. The organisers were thrilled by the level of participation, saying it well exceeded their expectations.

THE North Clare village of Lisdoonvarna is listed alongside the Chilean Atacama Desert, Australia’s Whitsunday Islands and the French Riviera in Lonely Planet’s top 52 travel resolutions for 2014. The world famous series of travel books has just released an ebook called Travel Resolutions, 52 New Ways to Experience Planet Earth and Lisdoonvarna and County Clare features at number three. Publishers expect tens of thousands of copies of the free ebook to be downloaded over the coming year and businesses in the North Clare village say this could herald the start of a good year for tourism in the area.
