The way is clear for the play off stage of the division 5 football league. In the last game in the league section of the competition, Kilrush defeated hitherto undefeated Kilmurry-Ibrickane at Kilrush last evening, Friday. That win for the shams has earned them a semi-final spot against their near neighbours Killimer who will have home advantage as they finished in second place. Kilmurry-Ibrickane await the winners in the final. Meanwhile, Clondegad are safely through to the final of the division 4 competition. They concluded their campaign with a three point win over Ml. Cusacks at Gleann Chiosog on Friday evening. The outcome of the game between Eire Og and Ballyvaughan at Ballyvaughan on this Sunday will determine the semi-finalists. For this Saturday’s clash with Dublin in the hurling league in Cusack Park, Davy Fitzgerald and his management team have made two changes in personnel. Colin Ryan is unavailable and his place in the forward line goes to Aaron Cunningham while Donal Tuohy had been handed the goalkeeping position ahead of Pat Kelly. Podge Collins, who led the attack last season, is ruled out due to a hamstring injury suffered in last Sunday’s challenge game with Kerry. The Cratloe dual player is one of a number of players not available this week because of injury, including, Martin ‘Oige’ Murphy and Enda Coughlan. Beaten by the same opposition after exta time at the same stage last year, Clare dominated on this occasion and fully deserved their victory which has earned them a tilt with Kilkenny in the final. The decider will take place as a curtain raiser to the Allianz hurling league final between Tipperary and Kilkenny at Thurles next Sunday. By Seamus Hayes Tipperary 2-24 Clare 2-17 Thirty six years without a National league title, Clare will have to wait at least one more having suffered a seven point loss to Tipperary in this semi-final tie played at the Gaelic grounds on Sunday before an attendance of 20,452. The All-Ireland champions can have few complaints as they failed to match the hunger and sharpness of their opponents who will now play Kilkenny in a repeat of last year’s final. Tipperary played with the aid of the breeze in the first half and were seven points ahead, 1-14 to 1-7, when the half time whistle sounded. The Clare men led for the only time in this tie in the fourth minute when Cathal McInerney scored their goal which put them 1-1 to 0-3 in front. By Seamus Hayes Twelve of the All-Ireland final starting line up have been named in the Clare team to take on Tipperary in this Sunday’s Allianz hurling league semi-final at the Gaelic grounds in Limerick (throw in at 4 p.m.) All-Ireland hat trick hero Shane O’Donnell is ruled out with a hamstring injury and he is replace in the full forward line by Cathal McInerney. The line will be completed by McInerney’s Cratloe team mates Conor McGrath and Podge Collins.
