A LOCAL tennis club look well set to make their own piece of history by becoming the first committee outside of Dublin to provide a permanent covered indoor tennis facilities as part of a major development estimated to cost in excess of €950,000. Killaloe Ballina Tennis Club has served up an impressive volley in terms of new facilities with a plan that will make them the envy of clubs throughout Munster once they come to fruition. Officers have already won a number of key matches, having secured planning permission as well as raising a massive €700,00 through fundraising, grants, club funds and donations. The club currently has four tennis courts and this will be increased by another two courts. It currently has about 250 memberships, which includes a lot of family memberships that allows two adults and two children to use facilities. THE construction and fit out of the first floor of the Miltown Malbay Community Centre to provide a dedicated space for youth activities has come a step closer with the announcement of substantial LEADER funding. Minister of State, Pat Breen said that a total of  €141,258 is to be provided through the fund for the youth facility and a functional space for youth based activities, meetings and recreation. “The young people of Miltown Malbay and surrounding area will benefit greatly from this facility. The first floor of the community centre will be fitted with a sprung floor spec on ground floor, sports equipment, multi- use electronic scoreboard and two pool tables,” he said. “A further €51,902 of LEADER funding will also be provided for the purchase of equipment for the community centre.” “On Friday (May 31) €407,329 was allocated to Clare. LEADER funding will be down by €105 million over the next five years, according to Councillor PJ Kelly, while CEDRA funding will be worth just 34 cent a year to every person in Clare. Councillor Kelly was calling on the Government to reverse its cutbacks to Leader funding at the adjourned April meeting of Clare County Council and said he was extremely disappointed in the reduction of funding, following a huge level of expectation throughout the country. “The money involved here is EU money, of which the Government only pays 37%,” he said. “In the previous programme we had €352m and because of costs rising over the past five years, we could have expected at least €100m more. Instead, it was cut back by €105m. We were given the impression that we would get €250m, until we actually looked at the small print.
