Ninety-seven-year-old Patrick ‘Pakie’ Wall from Ballydineen, Kilmihil, was the focus of attention at this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade in Ennis when he assumed the role of Grand Marshall. Patrick was selected following a nomination process through Clare County Council for the oldest Patrick in Clare to join Mayor of Ennis Pat Daly in leading the parade in a horse-drawn carriage, which was followed by approximately 50 groups representing the many aspects of life in the county. Ahead of the parade, a Certificate of Recognition was presented to Mr Wall outside the offices of Áras Contae an Chláir. The presentation was made by Anna Whelan, who is a fifth class pupil from Ballyea National School where Pakie attended from 1923 to 1931. Fifth class from Ballyea National School went on to win Best Parade Float/Group for their showcase of their All-Ireland winning Irish drama “1916-Eirigh amach na Casca”.

THE oldest Patrick in County Clare has been tracked down to fulfil an important duty. He is 97-year-old Patrick ‘Pakie’ Wall from Ballydineen, Kilmihil, and he has been named the grand marshall of this year’s Ennis St Patrick’s Day Parade. More than 10,000 people are expected to line the streets of the county capital on March 17 for the annual event. SUNDAY will be a particularly special day for Miltown, St Joseph’s GAA chairman, Gerry Curtin. He will travel to Cusack Park with the club’s senior team for their Clare football final date with Cooraclare. Understandably, he wants to see his beloved club emerge victorious, a result that will see him “hand over the baton of captain of the last team to bring the title to Miltown.” Twenty-five years ago, Miltown last won the blue riband of Clare football, beating Kilmihil in a final played at Cusack Park. “The final score on that occasion was 1-6 to 0-7 and Sean Burke’s goal proved decisive,” he said. Beaten finalists twelve months ago, Corofin have bounced back to win the intermediate football title. At sunny Hennessy Park in Miltown on Saturday afternoon, their ability to score goals proved too much for Kilmihil who led by the minimum margin at the mid point. The winners goals came from John Keane (2), Luke O’Loughlin and Damian Ryan and sealed a merited win which has earned them the right to represent Clare in the Provincial championship and they will begin this campaign in November. Meanwhile, Miltown St. Josephs booked their place in this season’s Clare senior football championshio final with a two goal victory over St. Breckans in the first of this year’s semi-finals, played in beautiful conditions at Cusack Park on Saturday afternoon. Officers from Revenue’s Customs Service seized a quantity of offensive weapons following a search, under warrant, of a private residence near Kilmihil today (Tuesday). The operation was conducted following an investigation into the attempted importation of a number of stun guns through the postal system. The weapons seized included stun guns, nunchucks, knuckle dusters, extendable batons, a flick knife and an air pistol. Members of An Garda Síochána assisted with the operation and investigations are ongoing.

A “MASSIVE improvement” in Kilrush is one of the things Clare’s highest ranking garda is most proud of, he revealed recently. “I came to Clare in 2007 and in those years there didn’t seem to be anything but bad publicity about Kilrush and incidents happening there,” Chief Superintendent John Kerin stated. “Certainly, I think if people look at the crime statistics and the occurrences there over the last three years, there has been a massive reduction in incidents of crime and disorder,” he added. “Now don’t get me wrong, there are still nasty enough incidents occurring but the amount of crime as shown in the statistics for 2014 and the first four months of this year would indicate that things have improved massively,” he said. From January to April this year, there were a total of four burglaries, two thefts from vehicles, five incidents of other thefts and 11 reports of criminal damage in Kilrush. A 25-year-old Kilmihil man died in Cork University Hospital on Thursday night, four days after being injured in a road traffic accident. Colum Callinan was the sole occupant of the car in the single vehicle accident, which occurred on Sunday morning on the Kilmihil to Knockalough road. After being attended to at the scene by local emergency services, he was airlifted to hospital. A popular young man, his death has caused sadness among the local community. Garda investigations into the accident are ongoing and  anybody who can help can phone 065 9080550.

FOLLOWING confirmation at the weekend that she has been awarded a full-time contract with the Irish Rugby 7s side, 23-year-old Kilmihil girl, Eimear Considine, has taken a step closer to participating in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. An Irish and PE teacher in Glasnevin, Considine has been playing senior football for Clare since she was 16 and has also represented the county senior camogie team for several years. “You’d never even imagine, that you might be in the Olympics,” she told The Clare Champion this week. Considine had not played rugby before and, incredibly, she was approached to try out via a message on LinkedIn, which she almost missed completely. “I have never played rugby. I’d heard of a lot of people who have transferred over to it and I always wanted to try it but I didn’t know how to go about it. I got a message on LinkedIn, which I only joined because we were …
