A NEW direction in design undertaken by Clare County Council to create a beautiful public realm space at a Shannon cemetery has been praised. The extension to Illaunmanagh burial ground in Shannon was officially opened by Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Tony O’Brien. The Council undertook a different approach to the design and layout of the extension moving away from the traditional dense grid layout. The new space, Councillor O’Brien observed, combines an homage to the nature, geography, heritage, and the people of Shannon The newly opened extension allows bereaved families to reflect in the comfort of nature and the Shannon Estuary. Councillor O’Brien, said, “Our graveyards are so important to us all here in County Clare. This project has taken many influences from scores of historic graveyards across Clare, where those who built this county now rest. “I know this place will be a fitting resting place for those we lose in the coming decade, and a place of …

MYSTERY surrounds the disappearance of the Fairy Doors that had been attached to trees on the River Walk, on the forest stretch between Illaunmanagh and Cluain Airne, reports Owen Ryan. The disappearance of the doors has disappointed those involved in making the doors, as well as the local children who enjoyed the installations. “We put them up there two years ago, the Men’s Shed made them, they were painted at the creches and the Tidy Towns put them up, said Derek Clune, of Shannon Men’s Shed and Tidy Towns. “We had to put them up fairly high, because if we put them too low we felt they could be vandalised. We had a ladder and I’d say they were eight feet off the ground and they were screwed in,” he added. He has no doubt that it is not a simple case of vandalism, because removing the Fairy Doors isn’t that simple. “It seems to me that whoever took them …

These are the first pictures from inside Clare’s first crematorium, which will open in Shannon in the coming weeks. While work is still continuing at the site in Illaunmanagh, it is quite close to completion now and the furnace that will burn the bodies has been fitted. Cremation, very much frowned upon by the Church in previous generations, is now accepted and has been growing in popularity in this country. Now one in six deaths are followed by cremation, compared to less than one in eight 10 years ago, despite the Republic still only having a handful of crematoriums. It is likely that more local people will now opt for cremation, when it becomes available locally, while the Shannon facility is likely to have customers from several neighbouring counties. The new crematorium has a main room, which can accommodate 140 people, prior to the incineration of the body. Here, people can speak about the deceased and it will be possible …

CLARE’S first crematorium is on the verge of completion at Illaunmanagh in Shannon. An open day will be held at the new facility, which is adjacent to Illaunmanagh Cemetery, on May 28 with the public welcome to view the development for a few hours. Developer Jim Cranwell said this week that things are nearly ready. “Everything is going very well. I’m down in Shannon at the moment and everything looks perfect.” He added, “All the equipment is in. The construction of the pathway and the roads and everything is being done. We’re nearly there alright but building always takes a while. We should be testing by May 20.” Mr Cranwell expects the first cremations in Clare will take place within a month. At the moment, one in six people in Ireland are cremated, with the figure having risen very significantly in the last 10 years. However, it is far below the rate in the UK, where almost 75% of bodies …
