A COUNTY Clare sports club has described funding received through Healthy Ireland as a “lifeline”. Derg Athletics Club received €22,000 of the total €374,100 allocated to county Clare under Healthy Ireland funding. On Friday the club hosted Minister of State with responsibility for Public Health, Well Being and National Drugs Strategy, Frank Feighan in Killaloe to see first-hand the benefits the funding has brought for local and voluntary groups in Clare. The TD was greeted by the Cathaoirleach and elected members of Clare County Council, Clare Oireachtas Members, and local representatives and stakeholders, together with staff from Clare County Council and representatives of the wider community in Killaloe. Established in 2013, Derg Athletics Club offers physical activity programmes for all in Clarisford Park, Killaloe. Read More »Launch of Clare’s ‘Not Around Us’ Campaign – Towards a Tobacco & Vape Free Clare
ON this National No Smoking Day County Clare is launching a ‘Not Around Us’ campaign. The initiative is being led by Clare County Council’s Healthy Clare team in partnership with a range of stakeholders including the HSE’s QUIT-Mid-West team, Clare Comhairle na nÓg, Clare Children and Young People’s Services Committee, Clare Youth Services, Clare Sports Partnership, Greener Clare and Healthy Ireland. “Not Around Us” is another step Towards a Tobacco and Vape Free Clare by promoting environments where it is easier for those who smoke to quit and stay quit and to help de-normalise smoking for the next generation. The campaign is in response to the government’s national target for a less than 5% smoking prevalence in Ireland by 2025. More than 4,000 pupils in 48 County Clare primary schools are currently signed up to the biggest health homework programme in Ireland. Nationwide, in excess of 180,000 school children, 7,000 teachers and 75,000 families are participating in an innovative programme, Super Troopers with laya healthcare, which encourages daily physical activity to be treated with the same importance as their regular school homework and other subjects. Super Troopers is now in place in more than 1,000 or one third of all Ireland’s primary schools and registration is still open for more schools to sign up to the programme until October 30. The 30-week programme has been designed by teachers for teachers and is backed by Clare-based leading clinical psychologist and parenting expert, David Coleman. David Coleman explains that the unique part of the Super Troopers initiative is that it is a long-term habit-changing programme for children to encourage positive attitudes towards healthy eating, well-being and exercise and not a quick-fix solution. …
