TOURISM in Ennistymon is set to take a major step forward as a number of enhancement projects are ear-marked to tie in with the development of its status as a Fáilte Ireland Destination Town. Last December, the tourism body announced that €500,000 would be issued, in two rounds, in order to boost the town’s attractiveness to visitors. The aim is to capitalise on the huge numbers travelling to North Clare attractions like the Cliffs of Moher and to entice them to spend more time and money in the town. At the June meeting of the West Clare Municipal District, Councillor Shane Talty urged the council to tackle the “low-hanging fruit” and examine projects that might be completed in conjunction with the Destination Town works. “The Fáilte Ireland funding will deliver a very welcome post-Covid boost for Main Street, Ennistymon, later this year,” the Fianna Fáil member noted. August was to have been a memorable month for young Matt Griffin. The 15 year-old Ennistymon teenager was to have made his national bow at a major cycling event in Austria but the Covid-19 pandemic has put the brakes on that happening. “It’s a pity. We were looking forward to the event and its very disappointing that the Austrian cycling event has been cancelled. I suppose health comes first in situations like that,” concedes his father, Matthew. The youngster’s metoric rise in cycling circles is driven by desire and a dedication which sees him make a 220 round trip to Kanturk in North Cork for training spins with the local youth cycling club. But distance is no barrier as his father Matthew fulfils the taxi driver role, ferrying him to and from the training sessions. THERE’S been something of a silver lining for the Falls Hotel in Ennistymon since the Covid-19 restrictions imposed on the construction and hardware sector were lifted almost two weeks ago. “Were able to hire a cherry picker and go ahead with the outside painting ourselves. Myself and my brother, John took it on and our father, Dan looked after the lower bits. It was no bother and it saved us a fair bit of money,” said the hotel’s general manager. Michael is passing on the opportunity to partially reopen the Falls on June 29, when the lockdown will be further relaxed to allow cafés and restaurants providing on-premises food and drink operate, where they can comply with social distancing measures and have strict cleaning in operation He said they are planning to reopen on July 20 but are awaiting details of regulations that will impact how the hotel operates. GARDAÍ in Ennistymon are seeking the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of Michael Healy, 35 years, who was last seen in the Doolin area on Tuesday, April 28 Michael is described as being 5 foot 10 inches in height with a stocky build. He has brown hair, a beard and also wears glasses. When last seen, Michael was wearing a dark (charcoal colour) knee-length jacket, a white shirt with a red stripe, blue jeans and blue Asics runners with white soles. He was also carrying a black backpack. Michael’s family are very concerned for his welfare. A FOURTREEN -year-old boy has died in an accident on a family farm in West Clare today. It is understood the boy sustained fatal injuries when a tractor overturned on him on the farm, which is situated between Ennistymon and Miltown Malbay. The boy has not been identified pending notification of his wider family. Garda Superintendent John Galvin said the gardaí responded to an emergency call that an accident had occurred on a farm at around 9am. The ambulance service was also tasked to the scene. “The gardaí notified the coroner and the body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem is due to be carried out this evening. “The Health and Safety Authority has also been notified and will visit the farm.” The superintendent said the accident came as a big shock to the community. “I want to extend my sympathy on behalf of the gardaí to the young boy’s parents and immediate family, as well …

ENNISTYMON on a wet Monday in January. Cold and damp, the scene is rather grim and the town is Martin Conway’s base but it is here that Joseph Woulfe will try and gain a few number one votes today. He says he has been trying to promote his campaign since last year, and once the election was called he started calling to people’s homes and businesses. A part-time farmer who chaired Beef Plan in Clare, he also works as a barber and says the interaction involved in that job is standing to him now, and he enjoys meeting voters. “I find it very easy, I’ve no problem in the world doing it, I’d do it all year around. I’m used to meeting people, that’s what I’ve been doing for the last 20 years, meeting people, talking to people and communicating with them. Gardaí in Ennistymon are seeking assistance from the public in locating 29-year-old Zuhair Chowdhury, who was last seen in the North Clare area on Tuesday, December 17. Zuhair is described as being 5’8” in height, of slight build with dark hair and brown eyes. It is not known what Zuhair was last wearing. GARDAí have arrested a man in his late teens and seized approximately €2,000 in suspected counterfeit notes following searches in Ennis and Ennistymon today (Thursday). As part of an ongoing investigation, Gardaí from the Clare division carried out a search at two houses in Ennis and Ennisymon. During the search in Ennis, Gardaí seized 100 counterfeit €20 notes. A man in his late teens was arrested at the scene and is currently detained at Ennis Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Speaking at Ennis Garda Station, Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Triona O’Rouke said: “We would like to remind businesses to ensure that staff carry out essential checks on any notes, regardless of the denomination. “Check the obvious security features before accepting notes, including the watermark, security thread, hologram patch and raised print. By taking the time to feel, examine and tilt the notes, businesses can prevent taking the loss to your business.”
