The annual appointments for the Diocese of Killaloe will be formally announced by Bishop Kieran O’Reilly on this Thursday. The appointments relate to clergy and pastoral workers and take effect from Friday, September 5. At present there are 82 priests serving in full-time parish ministry in the Diocese of Killaloe. Four Killaloe priests are engaged in full-time school chaplaincy, teaching and other pastoral work throughout Ireland. Additionally, three Killaloe priests serve overseas in various ministries, while 13 Killaloe priests are fully retired from active ministry. The diocese benefits from the service of seven priests from other dioceses or religious congregations serving as priests in parishes of the diocese. The diocese also benefits from the ministry of the clergy based at the Franciscan Friary in Ennis and the Cistercian Monastery at Mount St Joseph’s, Roscrea. One student is studying for priesthood for the Diocese of Killaloe, at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth. The Catholic population of the diocese is around 127,000.

An Ennis woman in her 80s has died in hospital following a car crash which occurred last week. Mary Kelly from College Green in Ennis was involved in a road traffic collision with another car on the Ennis to Kilrush Road  at Darragh on the evening of July 21 last. Ms Kelly died on Friday July 25 in hospital. Her funeral will take place on Tuesday morning. Ennis gardai  are investigating the crash and anyone with information is asked to contact them on 065-6848100.

One hundred years ago today, July 28, 1914 the Austria-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia and precipitated a chain of events which saw most European nations in a state of war within a week. Over the course of the following five years war raged on fronts as close as England where some south eastern English towns and cities were bombed, to the Western Front straddling France, Holland and Belgium, the Alps, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, Iraq and even naval battles off the coast of Chile. By wars end, there were 16 million deaths and 20 million wounded, ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history. It is beleived that as many as 7,000 Clare men enlisted in Allied forces during World War I and as many as 700 lost their lives. CLARE’S best displays this year have been when they have played with freedom and abandon. They have totted up significant scores in several games but have conceded far too much defensively. It might seem a bit churlish to point to areas of concern given that they hammered Carlow by 19 points but unless Clare can balance all out attack with a more coherent defensive approach, it is very unlikely that they will come close to matching Kildare. A few things must not happen. Half backs cannot steam forward in front of the ball, while one midfielder must sit if the other attacks either on or off the ball. If a half back or midfielder attacks, one of the half forwards not directly involved in the move will have to drift back to prevent Clare being caught on the break. CLARE County Council is urging the general public to have their voice heard in relation to the formulation of a 6-year social and economic development plan for Ennis and surrounding areas. The new Ennis and Environs Local Area Plan 2015-2021 will guide the development of the Clare county capital and its environs in terms of economic development, recreational and community requirements, as well as residential, retail, transport and infrastructural needs. A draft of the Plan is due to be completed by the end of 2014. Community groups, individuals and stakeholders are encouraged to make written submissions or observations no later than 4pm on Tuesday,  July 29 next. Senior planner with Clare County Council, Gordon Daly explained: “The Local Area Plan will seek to guide and facilitate the future growth and economic and social development of Ennis. An Ennis undertaker has put himself in the frame for Pieta House by organising a charity auction of 12 of his oil paintings. Sean Daly, who has worked with his father, Joe for the last nine years, will unveil his eye-catching exhibition of paintings upstairs in Tom Steele’s Pub, Lifford, this Sunday. Inspired by the death of a close friend through suicide in 2012, Mr Daly was determined to raise money for the regional suicide prevention centre. In addition to acquiring a BA in Fine Art from Manchester Metropolitian University when he studied sculpture and photography, he also holds a certificate in animation, which also involves a lot of painting. He is also preparing for another art exhibition in the Ennistymon Courthouse Gallery next month. Each oil on canvass painting took him about one month to complete. He also makes all the canvass material for his paintings. Having attended Ennis CBS up to third year, he moved to Ennis Vocational School …

Homes and businesses in Clare are set to benefit as a result of a joint ESB and Vodafone venture to upgrade broadband facilities across the country. The  €450 million investment will benefit 50 towns, among them Ennis and Shannon. ESB and Vodafone are to invest €450 million in building a 100%  fibre-to-the-building broadband network offering speeds from 200 Mbps to 1000 Mbps, propelling Ireland into the ranks of the world’s fastest broadband countries. Ireland will also become the first country in Europe to utilise existing electricity infrastructure on a nationwide basis to deploy fibre directly into homes and businesses, initially reaching 500,000 premises in 50 towns.

Emotional Life in Ireland is the theme of the 2014 Merriman Summer School, which  will take place in Ennis,  from August 13 to 17. It is, according to the organisers,  a timely topic for a country which has yet again been dealing with the aftermath of trauma, as we listen to stories of hidden pregnancies, secret births and unacknowleged deaths. Many of the events will be held in Glór. “How do we deal with our emotions and their consequences? Are we better at it now than we have been? What legacies have been left by our difficulty in understanding and reluctance to deal with our emotions? These are some of the areas for discussion at this year’s Merriman Summer School,” a spokesperson said. The director of this year’s school is Dr Patrica Coughlan, Professor Emerita in the School of English at UCC. She has selected a rich panel of speakers.
