Shannon Free Zone to feature on Nationwide

ON Friday Nationwide on RTÉ One television, will broadcast a special programme to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Shannon Free Zone. The largest multi-sectoral business park outside of Dublin, Shannon Free Zone is managed by Shannon Group’s property company, Shannon Commercial Properties. The Zone was founded in 1959 and was the brainchild of Dr Brendan O’Regan. In an effort to entice foreign direct investment to the region, and provide much-needed jobs, Dr O’Regan came up with the concept of developing a special industrial zone with tax incentives adjacent to Shannon Airport. Six decades later, Dr O ’Reagan’s legacy means there are now over 170 companies located in the Zone, employing over 8,000 people. Presenter Mary Kennedy explores how the zone has grown and developed, meeting Ray O’Driscoll, Managing Director of Shannon Commercial Properties, part of the Shannon Group, who fills her in on the history of the Shannon Free Zone, current developments and future plans. Lotto strikes again for Teresa

Lotto luck as stuck again for Teresa Cavanagh from Kildysart who won €38,000 on The Million Euro Challenge Game Show on Saturday on RTE at the weekend. The fourth show of the National Lottery’s latest gameshow, presented by Nicky Byrne, was broadcast last Saturday. Three players from Donegal and Clare won cash prizes to the value of €85,000. Teresa went on to play the Million Euro Challenge game and won a total of €38,000. This is lucky Teresa’s second appearance on a National Lottery TV game show. She won €71,900 on Winning Streak in 2012. Now retired, she previously worked in Ei Electronics, a smoke alarm company for 22 years. Teresa enjoys dancing, music and working at her flower beds. She invested her previous winnings in her garden and the grounds of her new house. €1.5b exports from Shannon region

Exports from the Shannon Region are contributing in a major way to the national economy. This is highlighted in the 2014 edition of Top 250 Exporters in Ireland and Northern Ireland, published this week by the Irish Exporters Association (IEA), in association with Investec, a leading specialist bank and wealth and investment manager. The report highlights that eight companies in Shannon exported goods to the value of €1.5 billion across the ICT and life sciences sector in 2013. Google Ireland Ltd (Google) was named the largest exporting company, moving up one place from its previous year’s ranking. Google was followed by Microsoft Ireland Ltd (2nd, export turnover of €15bn), Johnson & Johnson (3rd, export turnover of €10.5bn), Dell Products (4th, export turnover of €8.6bn) and Smurfit Kappa Group (5th, export turnover of €7.3bn).
