Gardaí have arrested one man and seized drugs with an estimated street value in excess of €36,000 during an intelligence led operation targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs in Clonlara late on Friday night. At approximately 11pm, Gardaí executed a search warrant at a premises in Clonlara. During the course of the search, a quantity of ketamine, MDMA, cannabis, cannabis plants, DMT and cannabis jellies were seized (subject to analysis) with an estimated street value of €36,000. Approximately €4,000 in cash, a taser and mobile phones were also seized along with drug paraphernalia. One man, in his 20s, was arrested during the course of the search and is currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 in Henry Street Garda Station. As a result of routine operations, Revenue officers in Shannon and Cork airports seized seven separate packages containing the controlled drug Kratom, worth a total estimated value of €66,000. Some €41,000 of the total was seized at Shannon. The drugs were in powder and capsule form and were destined for Clare, Cork and Galway. Kratom comes from a tropic tree, grown in South East Asia. At low doses it has cocaine-like stimulant effects, but at higher doses it can have sedative-narcotic effects. It is either chewed, smoked or made into a tea and long term effects of its use can include psychosis. The controlled drugs were in powder and capsule form and were destined for addresses in Clare, Cork and Galway. Investigations are ongoing. GARDAí in Ennis have arrested a man in his early 30s following the discovery of a growhouse in Mullagh on Thursday night. Gardai seized cannabis plants at various stages of growth with an estimated street value of up to €144,000, pending analysis, following a search of a house on Main Street, Mullagh. The house was searched as part of an ongoing operation targeting the cultivation, possession and sale of cannabis in the county. The growhouse, which was discovered shortly after midnight on Thursday by gardaí from the Ennis Drug Unit assisted by local gardaí, was described as “sophisticated”. A male in his early 30s was arrested at the scene and is currently being detained at Ennis Garda Station under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
