All pedalling together for Lucy

THE Tour De Munster takes place from August 8 to 11 this year, with the first two days seeing the event visit the Banner County. Down Syndrome Ireland is the beneficiary of the cyclists endeavours and the funds raised make a huge difference to children’s lives, according to Deirdre Power of Newmarket, whose daughter Lucy recently finished national school at St Conaire’s. Lucy was diagnosed with Down Syndrome in the weeks before her birth. “From about week 28 they were getting concerned that something wasn’t quite right,” said Deirdre. “They weren’t sure what was going on, they were talking about delivering early, and I was being scanned. They didn’t have to deliver early in the finish anyway. I was offered an Amniocentesis at week 33 which I ended up taking, they told me the risk to the baby was very minimal, the only thing that might happen was that I might go into early labour. “Then I got the diagnosis …

Tour de Munster cyclists primed for annual 600km charity spin

AS this year’s Tour de Munster charity cycle quickly approaches, cyclists will be entering the final stages of their training regimes to make sure they are flying fit to tackle the testing 600km route across the six counties of Munster on their quest to raise vital funds for Down Syndrome Ireland’s Munster branches. The tour will launch from The English Market on Grand Parade in Cork City on Thursday, August 4, and those participating will return to Cork on Sunday, August 7, where the finishing line will see them tackle the heights of St Patrick’s Hill. On their first day in the saddle, the cyclists will travel through Barry’s Cross at 6.35pm before arriving at the Lakeside Hotel in Killaloe at 7.15pm. Setting off on the Friday morning from Killaloe at 9am, they are due to pass through Tuamgraney at 9.45am before arriving in Ennis’ West County Hotel where they will stop for a break from 11am to 12 noon. …

Pedal power in Tour de Munster raises funds for Down Syndrome Ireland

PEDAL power has helped to raise over half a million euro for branches of Down Syndrome Ireland in Munster, including Clare. 2021 will certainly be a year to remember for Tour de Munster, not only as the Tour celebrated its 21st edition, but also raising a phenomenal €522,201-  its largest sum to date for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland. The grand total was revealed at a cheque presentation on Saturday with cycling legend and long term supporter of the Tour, Sean Kelly, presenting the cheque. Jean Hanrahan of Down Syndrome Clare said, “A huge round of applause is in order for all those involved in this year’s Tour de Munster. It’s truly great to see that, despite the circumstances of the past 18 months, 2021 has been the most successful Tour to date in terms of funds raised. Clare mum shares story of support from Down Syndrome Ireland

AS CYCLISTS gear up to take part in the Tour De Munster this weekend, Clare woman Orla Browne a member of Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI), has voiced her appreciation for the charity and the support it has given her. The charity cycle in its 21st year rolls through Clare on Friday, August 6 and is a key fundraiser for DSI. Orla and her three-year-old son Harry have been members of the Clare branch of Down Syndrome Ireland since her boy was born. The charity has since become a lifeline for them, as a family that did not expect Harry’s diagnosis and were devastated initially. Orla said that, at first, she did not want to be associated with organisations such as DSI because she was in total disbelief, but by the time Harry had reached a couple of weeks old, Orla was feeling overwhelmed and seeking all the advice she could get. “We were in fear of what his life would …

Clare awaits Tour that has had huge impact on Down Syndrome Ireland

Conor Clohessy looks ahead to the Tour De Munster passing through Clare next week DOWN Syndrome Ireland will be looking forward to having its 21st Annual Tour De Munster cycle fundraiser from August 5 to 8, having already raised a staggering €3 million since 2010 for the Munster branches of the charity alone. Because this year is different and the usual avenues for fundraising locally, such as collecting money in buckets, is far more difficult, the Clare branch of Down Syndrome Ireland has created a raffle in conjunction with the Tour De Munster to help them in their efforts. The prize of the raffle is a Corratec Dolomiti racing bike worth €1,600, donated by the family-run triathlon shop Planet-Tri, and within the first 24 hours the raffle had raised over €1,000. The Sky is the Limit for Kate

KATE Crotty and her mother Caitríona from Ennis are this week gearing up for the annual Tour De Munster Charity Cycle, which takes place from August 8 to 11. Thirty three year old Kate has completed a Certificate in General Learning and Personal Development in Mary Immaculate College and is currently undertaking a course on Office Administration in the Adult Education Centre, Ennis. Armed with her qualifications Kate has her eyes on an office job, and she and Mum Caitríona are so grateful of the supports received through Down Syndrome Ireland, which have led to so many doors opening for Kate. These supports would not have been available without the funds raised by the public through events like the Tour de Munster charity cycle, which marks 10 years in partnership with Down Syndrome Ireland Munster this year. Motorcyclist fatally injured in Kilrush crash

A Dublin man who was taking part in a motorbike rally which he helped  organize for Down Syndrome Ireland died in a motorcycle crash near Kilrush yesterday. Aidan Lynam, a 44 year-old father of three from Lucan,  had helped collect more than a €1million for the charity. The fatal crash occurred outside Kilkee on the Kilrush Road at approximately 11.45am. Mr Lynam was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the car was uninjured. The stretch of road was closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Witnesses are asked to contact Kilrush Garda Station on 065- 9080550.
