A share of the spoils for Oscar Traynor side

By Seamus Hayes Clare and Galway shared the spoils in the opening round of the Oscar Traynor inter legue junior competition at Doora on Saturday evening. Played in difficult weather conditions, Clare went ahead twice but failed to hold the advantage. Galway’s second equaliser came three minutes fromthe end, a minute after they were reduced to ten players when Darragh Corry picked up a second yellow card. The visitors’s equaliser came from the penalty spot after Darren Murphy was penalised. Overall, Clare should be pleased with a share of the points as the visitors created the greater number of cha nces, particularly in the opening half. A goal line clearance from Paddy O’Malley and the crossbar denied Galway in this period before Clare took the lead after  thirty two minutes. Burren United crowned u-17 champions

By Seamus Hayes Burren United 3 Newmarket Celtic 1 Burren United were crowned Clare under-17 soccer cup champions when they defeated Newmarket Celtic at a wet and windy county grounds on Saturday afternoon. The bad weather conditions made it very difficult for the players who, in the circumstances, served up a good game with the North Clare side emerging as worthy winners. Having played a 2-2 draw in the final game in the league the previous week in Lisdoonvarna, another close contest was expected. Incidentally they have finished on level terms in the league and must now play off for the title, a game expected to take place in the coming week. They were dealt an early blow when they lost goalkeeper Cathal Guerin to injury and this resulted in the introduction of James Howard. No €250,000 camogie grant

DESPITE receiving confirmation this week that they are not to receive LEADER funding of up to €250,000, Clare camogie officials have said that the development of Fr McNamara Park on the Quin road will go ahead “We are very disappointed that we won’t be getting this money but the project is going ahead and will be completed”, Clare board PRO, Brid McNamara told the Clare Champion. The grant, in two lots, was announced at the beginning of 2013 towards the Clare organisation’s purchase and development plans for their new headquarters, Fr McNamara Park. During the summer concern emerged that the funding might be withdrawn as the eligibility of the project for funding was being assessed. “There is a procedure there whereby all projects are assessed, Clare camogie treasurer, Michael Maher told the Clare Champion at the time.
