A YOUNG woman, whose car went off a bridge into a river near the Dingle peninsula, was rescued by three members of the Clare Outdoor Club on Sunday. Nine members from the club travelled to Dingle to climb Stradbally and Beenoskee mountains last weekend. The group had just arrived in Glanteenassig Forest Car park to begin their hike. The car the young woman was driving pulled in to let two of their cars pass. The third car had missed the turn for the forest and arrived a few minutes later. The occupants of this car, Paul Kinnane, Melitta Price and Deidre O’Donoghue came to the rescue of the woman whose car capsized and went into the river. Five other club members, Clara Slattery, Ellen Frawley, Mike Egan, Monica McMahon and Peter O’Shea arrived a short time afterwards to lend their assistance. A Clare student joined Education Minister, Jan O’Sullivan and her Northern Ireland counterpart, John O’Dowd at an event this week to encourage Ireland’s youth to apply for the 2015 Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards Programme. The awards programme recognises young people for exemplary volunteer service and Elysha Ní Chulain from Bunratty, a student at Coláiste Íde in Daingean Uí Chúis, Kerry, last year’s winner, endorsed the initiative. At the reception in Dublin, both ministers encouraged schools across the island to nominate young people who give their time, energy and spirit to make a positive impact on their communities. A COUNTY Clare girl has been honoured for her courage and willingness to help other. Elysha Ní Chuláin, a fifth-year student at Coláiste Íde in Dingle, Kerry has been crowned the 2014 All Ireland Youth Volunteer of the Year. The Bunratty teenager and Dayna Ní Shíocháin, a student at Gaelcholáiste Mhuire, North Monastery, County Cork, were launded at the eighth annual Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards, presented by Republic of Ireland football manager, Martin O’Neill. Sixteen-year-old, Elysha was honoured for her volunteering activities with Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin and Barretstown Camp in Kildare. At five, Elysha was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She was hospitalised in Crumlin for 10 years. While there, she underwent chemotherapy and several surgeries, which have left her with permanent kidney damage and blind in one eye. “When I was eight, my tired body gave up.
