A SLOVAKIAN man whose driving was today described as “reckless” and showed “a propensity for risk taking”, has been sentenced to six years in prison, with the final two suspended, and has been banned from driving for 15 years. Rene Miko (21) of Place de Plouzane in Kilrush pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Eugene McNamara on October 26, 2016 at Lifford, Gort Road, Ennis. At his sentence hearing today, Monday, at Ennis Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Gerald Keys said it was the court’s duty to protect the public from illegal driving of this kind. “A message must go out that anyone who drives in this manner, faces a serious sentence being imposed, and a significant ban on their licence. A man appeared before the district court this week concerning 10 counts of dangerous driving across Ennis and areas in East Clare. Andrew Moroney (32) of Lower Main Street, Tulla appeared in connection with 16 alleged driving offences in Ennis and East Clare in the early hours of Monday of this week. In the case, Mr Moroney is facing 10 separate dangerous driving counts from the incident that lasted just under one hour after 2.30am on Monday morning. The Tulla man is facing two counts of dangerous driving from his driving on Abbey Street, Ennis, two counts from his driving on O’Connell Square in Ennis and two counts on the Quin Road, Ennis. A 20 year old man was before a special sitting of Ennis District Court this afternoon on a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of Eugene McNamara at Lifford, Gort Road, Ennis on October 26 of last year. He also faces a charge of unlawfully taking a vehicle at Lake Villa, Gort Road, Ennis on the same day. The defendant, Rene Miko, is a 20 year old man originally from Slovakia and now with an address at Place de Plouzane, Kilrush. Judge Gráinne O’Neill agreed to grant bail subject to several conditions. These included that the defendant reside at his address in Kilrush, sign on at the local Garda station daily and that an independent surety of €6,000 be provided, with €2,000 to be lodged. An horrific hit and run incident in which an elderly pensioner lost his leg was recalled at Limerick Circuit Court on Thursday when a “full-time criminal” was jailed for eight years arising from the incident. Michael Sheehan (27) of Cliona Park, Moyross, Limerick was granted bail – despite Garda objections – just three days before he ploughed into three pensioners outside Parteen pitch and putt course on September 25, 2014. A former inter county hurler for Limerick, Mr Eric Ryan (80) suffered catastrophic injuries after he was pinned to the ground by Sheehan’s car, and had to have his left leg amputated from below the knee as a result of the ordeal. His friend Liam Barry (78), a retired garda, also suffered a number of injuries including a brain haemorrhage and damage to his kidney and liver but has since made a full recovery. A 30 year old man has appeared before a sitting of Ennis District Court this Thursday in connection with an alleged hit and run incident at Knockadoon, Tulla on October 28 last. James O’Donoghue with an address at Bay 8, Lynch’s Lane, Clondalkin, Dublin 2, appeared before Judge Aeneas McCarthy on Thursday charged with a single charge of dangerous driving at Knockadoon on October 28. Inspector Tom Kennedy, prosecuting, outlined that the State would allege that the accused was involved “in a hit and run incident in which the defendant crashed his car into another vehicle, he then left the scene and later turned up at hospital”. Garda Darren McLoughlin of Scariff garda station gave evidence of arresting the defendant, charging him and administering the relevant caution.
