SANTA Claus is coming to town and will join Mayor of Ennis Municipal District, Clare Colleran Molloy, for the switching on of the Christmas lights and the launch of ‘Christmas in Ennis’ in O’Connell Square from 4pm to 5.30pm on Friday. Santa will arrive by fire engine for the event, which will also feature a 40 foot Christmas tree, children’s entertainment, carol singing, hot chocolate and face painting. A post-box, crafted by the Ennis Men’s Shed, will be situated in the square giving children the opportunity to post their Santa letters. In conjunction with the switch-on of the Christmas Lights, Ennis Lions Club will launch their Remembrance Tree Project in aid of Cahercalla Hospice at 5pm. Minor traffic diversions will be in place in the square from 3pm on Friday. STUDENTS from St Anne’s School in Ennis will mark Universal Children’s Day on Tuesday (November 20) by writing their own special messages on postcards depicting their artwork. Supported by the Clare County Council Arts Office as part of their Embrace for Arts Programme, the pupils of Class 6 worked with artist Shona MacGillivray on mixed media canvases, depicting ducks, rockets, dinosaurs and other imaginative subjects. Their paintings were photographed by John Howard before being printed on to the postcards. The children will write messages to people to advocate, promote and celebrate Universal Children’s Day as well as explore themes and questions around being a child in 2018. Students of St Anne’s will gather at 10.20 am to walk to the post box, which is located beside the school.

CLARE County Council has announced the appointment of new members to the Board of Cliffs of Moher Centre Ltd. The new members will be involved in overseeing the policy planning and governance of the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience in Clare. The Board is chaired by entrepreneur and businessman Bobby Kerr, and also comprises individuals with a diverse knowledge of the tourism industry, product development, marketing, commercial development, finance, local government, local community and governance. A new strategy for the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience will be developed over the coming months following consultation with key stakeholders. Latoon Creek Bridge, located on the R458 between Clarecastle and exit 11 of the M18, has reopened in line with the six-month construction period and road closure, as works have been substantially completed. Some works will remain to be completed and L&M Keating has indicated that they may carry out these works within a temporary traffic management plan at the bridge over the coming weeks. The previous bridge was not able to carry full bridge loading (18 tonne limit was in place) but there is a state of the art bridge with a structure capable of carrying maximum allowable vehicle weights.

  Clare County Council, on the advice of the HSE, has today (Friday lifted restrictions relating to public bathing at Whitestrand Doonbeg. Notices indicating that swimming is prohibited at the beach were originally put in place on Wednesday due to the detection of elevated levels of bacteria (e-coli) in the bathing water. On the advice of the HSE and following analysis of water samples taken on Wednesday and Thursday,the council announced the lifting of all restrictions relating to bathing at Whitestrand Doonbeg. The suspected source of the e-coli is run-off from surrounding land during heavy rainfall on Sunday evening and Monday morning. Clare County Council says bathing water testing protocols will continue throughout the bathing season. Meanwhile, lifeguard cover at Clare’s Blue Flag beaches, including Whitestrand Doonbeg, commences during the June Bank Holiday Weekend. Clare County Council, on the advice of the Health Service Executive (HSE), has announced that due to elevated levels of bacteria (e-coli) in the bathing water arising from heavy rainfall on Sunday night and Monday morning, swimming is prohibited at Whitestrand Doonbeg. Public bathing notices indicating that swimming is prohibited are being put in place.The councilis carrying out an investigation into the cause of the pollution. Clare County Council is hopeful that the restrictions could be lifted for the weekend pending that water test results from today and tomorrow are deemed by the HSE to be within bathing water quality limits. None of Clare’s other designated bathing waters are affected.

Plans by Clare County Council to attract new large-scale data centres to the county should be accompanied by a link to generate the required energy through renewable sources. That’s according to An Taisce heritage officer Iam Lumley, who stressed that lessons need to be learned, following Apple’s decision to abandon its plans for an €850 million data centre in Athenry. The company, which was facing a fresh Supreme Court and European Court appeal to a facility it announced more than three years ago, is proceeding with a second data centre in Denmark. “Several years ago, we applied to build a data centre at Athenry. Despite our best efforts, delays in the approval process have forced us to make other plans and we will not be able to move forward with the data centre,” said the company in a statement. The so-called ‘road to nowhere’ in Ennis has been completed, Clare County Council has confirmed. Phase one of the Ennis Northern Inner Relief Road link opened on Thursday. The 520m road development in the townland of Dulick links the R-458 Gort Road with the Ennis Information Age Park Building and the Clare Technology Park. The opening marks the completion of the first phase of an overall plan to provide a link road between the Gort Road and the Tulla Road (R-352). Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council Tom McNamara and Mayor of Ennis, Councillor Paul Murphy have both welcomed the development, describing it as “strategic infrastructure that will open up the Clare Technology Park to new investment”. Pat Dowling, chief executive of Clare County Council, commented, “Clare County Council considers the provision of this roadway to be of strategic importance to the development of the town of Ennis. “The purpose of this road is two-fold, in that it will improve traffic …
