WHILE Donald Trump is planning to build a wall between American and Mexico if elected United States President this November, his “small potatoes” resort in West Clare has applied to Clare County Council to construct a €10 million “beach augmentation” coastal protection barrier, which management insist is not a wall. If planning permission is granted to Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Ireland in Doonbeg to proceed with their 2.8km long beach augmentation plans, which would constitute the use of 200,000 tonnes of limestone, it will take eight months to complete the project. In their submission to the council, consultants warned that if planning permission is not granted, the resort may have to close. The consultants also claim that the West Clare economy would benefit to the tune of €38m, between 2017 and 2024, if permission is granted. Clare County Council has today (Tuesday) issued a wind alert for the entire county for overnight and early Wednesday. Met Éireann is warning that westerly winds, veering northwest will increase to mean speeds of 65 to 75km/h with gusts of 110 to 130km/h at times overnight in exposed areas, especially in the coastal fringes, with high sea also. The council is warning members of the public in County Clare to avoid exposed coastal locations throughout Tuesday night and early on Wednesday. Meanwhile, motorists are being warned to take extra care on roads this evening and overnight as three weather warnings have been issued for a number of places in Ireland. Clare County Council is warning of the risk of further coastal flooding on this Monday evening because of a high tide coinciding with the sea surge and continuing strong winds from Storm Imogen. High Tide is forecast for 5.30pm on the Clare coast and the Shannon Estuary. The Council is warning members of the public to avoid exposed coastal locations and roads affected by flooding on Monday morning. Flooding occurred at a number of locations along the Clare coastline due to a combination of a significant storm surge, strong westerly winds and a high tide at 5.15am. The worst affected locations on Monday afternoon are at Kilcredaun and Rinvella near Carrigaholt, Ross Bay, Marine Parade in Kilkee, White Strand (Miltown Malbay), Lahinch promenade and carpark, and at Doolin Pier carpark. Council staff are working throughout the West Clare Municipal District to remove storm debris from the affected locations and to carry out necessary repairs to damaged infrastructure.

Clare County Council will close the Westbury Area Office in southeast Clare when the present lease expires next month. The closure will not result in any job losses as staff working in Westbury will be redeployed to other positions in the council. The decision not to renew the lease follows an examination of the level of activities at the Area Office which has identified that in 2015 the majority of the contacts, either through personal callers or telephone calls, were in relation to motor tax transactions and primarily to renew motor tax online. Excluding motor tax, a total of 400 contacts were made with the office throughout 2015. This equates to less than 10 contacts per week. Clare County Council has issued a weather warning in advance of forecasted storm force conditions overnight and during the early part of Friday. Met Eireann has introduced a Status Orange warning for Clare and is forecasting that Storm Gertrude will bring southwest winds later veering westerly and increasing to 65 to 80 km/h overnight with potential gusts of 110 to 130 km/h. Clare County Council is advising members of the public to exercise caution in exposed coastal locations.

THE centenary of the 1916 Rising will be commemorated with the installation of a €20,000 permanent artwork in Ennis, it has been confirmed. Clare County Council have begun the process of commissioning the artwork, with a proposed location of Abbey Street. It is planned to place the new artwork adjacent to the 1916 memorial stone currently in place, which was installed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rising in 1966. According to Clare County Council, it is envisaged that the artwork will “be inclusive of the Ireland 2016 themes: remembering, reconciling, presenting, imagining and celebrating”. Clare County Council has confirmed that a number of roads have reopened in flood-affected parts of North and Southeast Clare as water levels continue to slowly recede. All roads in Springfield, Clonlara are now passable. The N67 at New Quay has reopened but a number of local primary routes remain flooded in the North Clare area. Meanwhile, Clare County Council has received confirmation from the ESB of its decision to reduce the discharge level at Parteen Weir from 300 cumecs to 265 cumecs.

Clare County Council environment section has organised a series of workshops in Ennis, Scariff and Miltown Malbay to assist community groups with the Sustainable Waste & Resource Management category of the national SuperValu Tidy Towns competition. While the workshops have been developed to assist Tidy Towns groups, Clare County Council is also encouraging individuals, business, schools and community groups to attend and learn how to become involved in local environmental awareness projects or initiatives within their community. The upcoming workshops, which are supported through the Department of Environment’s Local Agenda 21 Fund, the EPA Local Authority Prevention Network and the Southern Region Waste Management Office, are free of charge. The first themed workshops – entitled ‘Tidy Towns: Promoting a more Sustainable Community’ – will take place at McNamaras Bar in Scariff from 11.00am to 12.30pm on January; Whitestrand Lifesaving Training Centre in Miltown Malbay from 11.00am to 12.30pm on January 27 and Áras Contae an Chláir in Ennis from 7.00pm …
