Arising from the low take-up of Government supports, a major awareness campaign is to be launched in Clare to inform SMEs of the programmes in place to assist start-up businesses. And local Dáil Deputy, Joe Carey has claimed the campaign is warranted as there are 80 Government supported programmes in place to support SMEs but “most people don’t know about these schemes and there is a very low take-up rate”. “With SMEs and regional growth taking a central focus in this year’s Action Plan for Jobs, we need to ensure that all existing businesses and start-ups in Clare are aware of the support on offer”, he added. The awareness campaign will consist of national and local radio advertising, online advertisements and the launch of a new website. “SMEs employ 650,000 people in Ireland, and start-ups account for two thirds of all new jobs created. The Clare Champion National Union of Journalists chapel today held a minutes silence in solidarity with the people of France, as they begin three days of national mourning following the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris. In a campaign launched by the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and supported by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the groups have condemned the French attack. Irish NUJ Secretary Séamus Dooley said there was public revulsion at what had happened in Paris yesterday. “We stand with the people of France but especially with the families of those who were killed because of their profession, as journalists and guardians of the peace”. By Owen Ryan PROBABLY the most emotional scenes of the day so far broke out when Clare Colleran Molloy took the final seat in Ennis, just pipping Ger O’Halloran. It was hard to get to talk to the new councillor, as she was under siege from excited well wishers and friends, and she said she was over the moon with winning a seat. “It’s fantastic, as I said earlier it’s wonderful when you put in the effort and you get the reward you’re looking for.
