Bernard Lucas to take on toughest challenge yet for Burren Chernobyl

North Clare man, Bernard Lucas, is about to take on his most difficult challenge to date as he attempts to scale the highest peaks in Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales in just three days. Mr Lucus, along with his long time climbing companions Deirdre Linnane and Cormac Coyne, will attempt this year’s Caitríona Lucas Challenge totally unsupported and will have to take turns driving between each mountain. Indeed, if all goes well, the trio aim to arrive on the peak of Carrauntoohill in Kerry on June 18, the date late Ms Lucas’s birthday. Caitríona Lucas was just 41 when she lost her life while on active duty with the Doolin Unit of the Irish Coastguard in September of 2016. She was the first Irish Coast Guard volunteer to die while on active duty. Bernard, Deirdre and Cormac have chosen the Burren Chernobyl Project as the charity benefactors of this year’s event. “I think this might be our toughest …

Liscannor Bay swim on Sunday for Burren Chernobyl Project

THE 49th annual Liscannor Bay Swim will take place this Sunday, August 1 at 1:30pm, in aid of the Burren Chernobyl Project, writes Conor Clohessy. Event organiser, Pat Conway, raised over €10,000 for the cause in 2020 and hopes that he can continue to oversee the swim until next year, when he can pass the tradition on to his family members. Liscannor Bay Swim originally took place in aid of a local boy who required special therapy in Budapest for a rare medical condition, and has supported various charities over the years; for the majority of those, funds have been sent to the Burren Chernobyl Project. The Burren Chernobyl Project was established by Brother Liam O’Meara in 1993 to aid the child victims of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor explosion, helping families through the social, medical and economic ramifications of the disaster. “I have great admiration for Brother Liam and for what he does out there. The swim is only a …

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Burren Chernobyl Project is holding a fundraising walk in Ennistymon next Sunday (April 24, 2016). Nicola Corless spoke to Brother Liam O’Meara, director of the project, about the organisation’s work and his full-time involvement with it for the past 15 years.   Brother Liam is a Limerick man, reared on the border with Tipperary close to Galbally. He studied primary teaching at Mary Immaculate College and taught for four years in Limerick before becoming a Christian Brother in 1981 and working in schools in Cork. He moved to Ennistymon in 1986, the same year as the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, in Chernobyl, Ukraine. Liam taught happily in the three-teacher CBS primary school in the North Clare town until 1999, when he dedicated himself fully to working with the Burren Chernobyl Project. The organisation was founded in 1993, with projects kicking off the following year. It was then …
