Ennistymon will become the harp capital of Ireland this Friday with four free events taking place to celebrate National Harp Day. Local master harpist, Aisling Lyons, has put together a unique programme which explores Ireland’s national musical instrument in a number of unique ways. These events are all free and are aimed at introducing local people to the joys of the harp. They include a session of harp yoga in the Falls Hotel with musician Simon O’Reilly on pedal steel guitar and yoga teacher, Sue Redmond, from 10am to 11am. This will be followed by a talk in Ennistymon library entitled ‘Early Irish Harp’ from 11am to 12noon. This talk will be hosted by one of the pioneers of the Irish harp, Paul Dooley, who will also give a demonstration as part of the event. CLARE musician Aisling Lyons is in line for two prizes at a prestigious national awards ceremony next week. The harper has been nominated for this year’s RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards in both the Best Folk Instrumentalist and Best Emerging Artist categories. The Folk Awards night will be in Vicar Street Dublin on Thursday, November 17. The following night Aisling will perform with Sean Lyons and Dermot Sheedy in Glór premiering their new work ‘Merfolk’ which has been a collaborative project developed by Glór and Creative Ireland Clare. Aisling who also plays concertina, performs alongside Seán on vocals/guitar/uilleann pipes/whistles and Dermot on bodhrán/percussion at the Ennis venue. The three began playing together in 2021 and have refined a folk sound that is deeply-rooted in tradition yet brimming with originality. CLARE harpers Aisling Lyons and Paul Dooley will be performing as part of the Harps Alive | An Chruit Bheo | Harps Leevin festival in Belfast this weekend. Known as one of the finest musicians in traditional music, Aisling Lyons is a multi-award winning musician and composer. With performances all around the globe and eight All-Ireland titles under her belt, Aisling is the current harp tutor at the University of Limerick and University College Cork. Aisling will be one of fifteen harpers to perform at the Commemorative Concert on Saturday, July 16; a recreation of the Belfast Harpers Assembly 230 years ago. HARPS Alive Lá na Cruite│Harp Day 2021 takes place on Saturday October 16 and Aisling Lyons will be playing in Glór to mark the event. From Clare, Aisling is a multi-award winning harpist and concertina player. Her family are steeped in the tradition of Irish music and Aisling is the holder of eight All-Ireland titles. An experienced performer and much sought after teacher, she has performed and taught masterclasses in the UK, Shetland, Norway, France, Germany, USA, China, Canada & Australia. Aisling graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Irish Music from The University of Limerick in 2018, was awarded First Class Honours from the Professional Master of Education course in 2021 & holds a Grade 8 award with Distinction from the London College of Music.
