DOZENS of Clare primary and secondary schools will remain closed this Thursday and Friday due to the icy weather conditions that have continued into the first week of 2010.
At the time of going to press, more than 40 Clare schools had announced that the would be unable to open until next Monday.
Earlier on Wednesday, Clare gardaí and Clare County Council issued a joint statement on the school closure issue. They said that it was up to individual boards of management throughout the county to judge whether their respective school should open or not.
“Clare has endured very severe weather conditions with sub-zero temperatures consistently over the last few weeks. The most up-to-date information to hand from Met Éireann indicates that these conditions will prevail up to and including the weekend at least,” the statement said.
“In view of this, schools’ management should consider whether or not to reopen their schools this week following the Christmas break. This decision should be made having regard to local conditions. All road users are reminded that during this cold spell they should avoid making any journeys, unless necessary, in the interests of road safety,” the statement added.
