THE First Friday gig returns to Glór in February with a double bill of music. Seamus Begley, Tim Edey and the Damien O’Kane Trio will perform on Friday, February 4 at 8pm at the Ennis venue.
Seamus Begley comes from Baile ngall on the Dingle Peninsula and is a legend in Irish music. His partnership with the Australian/Irish guitarist and producer Steve Cooney led to arguably the most exciting duet in Irish music and the album Meiteal is considered a classic. After Begley and Cooney went their separate ways in 1999, Seamus formed a duet with Macroom guitarist Jim Murray and the duet still tour, record together and have just released their second album.
Tim Edey, at 29 years old, is regarded by many as one of the finest guitarists and multi-instrumentalists in the Celtic music scene. He has played, toured and recorded with most of the biggest names in the Celtic music scene, including Michael McGoldrick, Lunasa, Mary Black, Sharon Shannon, Frankie Gavin, Session A9, Capercaillie’s Donald Shaw and Charlie McKerron, Altan and Steve Cooney. Edey is currently with the Sharon Shannon Band, and plays in a duet with Isobel Crowe and regularly with Michael McGoldrick, Brendan Power, Lucy Randall and Charlie McKerron.
With Edey’s guitar style influenced by his father Richard, Steve Cooney, Django Reinhardt and Ed Boyd, his own approach to playing traditional music was set to be pretty special from the start. Tim loves improvising and has often been described as an Irish jazzer.
Damie O’Kane’s banjo playing has given him a reputation as one of the finest Irish players on the scene today. Joined by Gerard Thomson and John Joe Kelly, this new trio is taking the folk music scene by storm. Contact Glór box office for tickets at 065 6843103 or email boxoffice@glor.ie
