Mills win in local derby

O’Callaghan’s Mills 2-10
Broadford 0-12

THE final of the Pa ‘Fowler’ McInerney Hurling Tournament marking 125 years of GAA in O’Callaghan’s Mills, between O’Callaghan’s Mills and neighbours Broadford, was played in Kilkishen before a large crowd on Sunday evening.
Both teams went into the match without a number of regulars. Broadford started the brighter with two points on the board in the opening minutes from Pauric Taylor and Mark Moloney. The Mills then went on a scoring spree with a cracking goal from Adrian Donovan and points from Adrian Flaherty (2), Eoin McInerney and Donovan. The Mills put together some lovely moves and the Broadford backs struggled to cope with the play of the winners’ forwards. Both teams went score for score up to half-time. Donie Whelan impressed with two fine points, leaving the half-time score at 1-7 to 0-5 in favour of the Mills.
Broadford made a number of changes at half-time and started the second half with All-Ireland winner from the previous evening, Pauric Hickey, at wing-forward. Adrian Donovan landed two great points in the opening minutes of second half with Whelan again on target.
Over the course of the next 10 minutes Broadford started to dominate, with points from Teefy, Whelan and James Gunning, but should have put more scores on the board in that period as they hit a number of wides. Garry Neville pointed with five minutes to go and an Adrian Flaherty goal sealed victory for the Mills, who were now up by five points. The final score of the game was for Broadford with Whelan again on target.
For the winners, Conor and John Cooney, Brian and Paddy Donnellan, Adrian Donovan and Adrian Flaherty were the leading lights in the forwards. Broadford’s Cathal Chaplin had a fine game in both midfield and centre-back, while Pauric Taylor and Donie Whelan up front did well. Following the game, refreshments were served in the clubhouse.
The family of Liam McInerney presented the Mills club with a Munster Council GAA blazer for the clubhouse. Liam was a club trustee and served in various positions on both club and county committees. Liam was also Munster GAA president.
Chairman of O’Callaghan’s Mills, Michael O’Brien presented the cup to winning captain, Brian Donnellan after the game.
