KILRUSH Community School will be saying Hello Dolly nightly from next Wednesday March 14, until the following Bank Holiday Monday.
Kilrush Choral Society will host their annual musical from 8pm each evening, featuring a cast of approximately 75.
Catherine Tobin is musical director, while Ger Rush produces the show. The orchestra is under the direction of conductor John Roe from Galway.
“In all, we’d have about 75 people taking part. We have about 25 kids in the parade alone,” Miss Rush confirmed.
Suzanne Murphy plays Dolly; Horace Vandergelder is played by Charles Clancy. Liam Woulfe is Cornelius, while Kevin Shalloo plays Barnaby. Aileen Downes plays Mrs Molloy and Marie McMahon is Minnie.
The production has been months in the making.
“We’ve been preparing since the beginning of last October. It has the makings of a pretty good production,” Ger Rush forecast.
Based on The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder, Hello Dolly tells the story of Dolly Gallagher Levi, a matchmaker who has been hired to arrange a marriage for the widowed half-millionaire Horace Vandergelder. Dolly, however, has other plans. She has herself been recently widowed and come to the conclusion that Horace and his fortune will make her the perfect mate. So when she arrives in Yonkers, she immediately begins to plant seeds of doubt in Vandergelder’s mind about Irene Molloy, the pretty young widow she has picked out for him. Meanwhile, down in the bowels of Vandergelder’s Hay and Feed Store, two of his employees are plotting to take advantage of the boss’ absence. Cornelius and Barnaby have decided to sneak off for their first-ever look at the big city. Once they make their escape, however, they have the misfortune of spotting Vandergelder on the street. What happens next will become clear from next Wednesday night.
