It’s 50 years on for A Doll’s House at Glór

A NEW version and production of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House will be staged in Glór this week.
The production, which is being staged by Second Age Theatre will run from Monday to Thursday, December 3, with performances at 1pm and 8pm on Monday and Wednesday and 8pm evening performances on Tuesday, December 1 and Thursday, December 3.
This new version of the Ibsen classic has been written by Alan Stanford and is based on a literary translation by the Ibsen scholar and Norwegian translator Paul Larkin.
The version will have a wide appeal for all interested in classic large-scale theatre with high production values.
Alan Stanford, an actor/director, has in recent years gained considerable success through his work as a writer and among his adaptations of literary classics are Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Oliver Twist and The Old Curiosity Shop.
Stanford’s adaptation of A Doll’s House sees the play moved forward 50 years and into the 1930s. The action has not completely shifted away from Norway, but Stanford does modernise the dialogue. But the overall intention is to present Ibsen’s ideas and themes as current and relevant rather than outdated curiosities.
Controversial when first published in Norway in 1879, as it is sharply critical of 19th century marriage norms, the play has often been called the first true feminist play where much of the drama centres around one of the greatest fictional characters ever written, Nora Helmer. Nora is a respectable married mother with a moderately comfortable lifestyle. Once the veneer of domesticity cracks, she is forced on an unavoidable journey of self-discovery. She confronts truths that shake the foundations of her existence with far reaching consequences for both herself and those around her.
The Helmers are all set to enjoy Christmas. Torvald has been promoted and Nora is delighted. Everything at last seems to be going right, until a visitor arrives uninvited and causes them to question just how perfect their marriage is.
