MERCURY Music Prize nominee Lisa Hannigan will return to the Glór stage in early December, following the release of her debut album Sea Sew, which went platinum in Ireland recently.
The County Meath singer songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has performed on The Jay Leno Show and Stephen Colbert Report on her last headline tour of US. While back home, she has been nominated for both the Choice Music Prize and for Meteor Best Irish Female and Meteor Best Irish Album awards.
Lisa Hannigan started her singing career at the age of six as the fairy on top of the Christmas tree in a school play and thereafter spent many years singing in choirs and musical choruses in school, all the while taping songs off the radio. After hearing a recording of Maria Callas singing the Bell Song from Delibe’s, Lakme, she became fixated with the idea of learning how to sing like her.
A chance meeting with singer songwriter Damien Rice led to a long period of collaboration and development. Lisa spent the next few years touring the world, meeting wonderful musicians and friends, writing songs, contributing backing vocals on many friends’ records, including the Frames and Mic Christopher, singing with the legendary Herbie Hancock and gradually finding her voice.
When this collaboration came to an end after seven years, Lisa was left with a notebook of songs and the desire and confidence to put them onto a record. After spending time stitching the lyrics onto rough cotton, and picking out the many references to the sea in the lyrics, Lisa decided to call the album Sea Sew.
She will be performing in Glór on Monday, December 7 at 8pm. More information is available from the Glór box office on 065 6843103 or by visiting www.glor.ie.
