East Clare elect captains for 2012


KEVIN Mannion and Catherine Minogue have been elected men’s and ladies captains at East Clare Golf Club for 2012.
At the annual general meeting of the men’s section last Wednesday, Kevin was installed as captain, while the ladies’ club annual meeting held recently, elected Catherine Minogue to the position of captain for the coming year.
The captains’ drive-in takes place on Sunday week, December 18. There will be a draw for playing partners at 10am.
Meanwhile, Mike Noonan (14) was the winner of the men’s singles competition at East Clare last week with 43 points. In second place was Liam Husband (7) with 39 points.
In the ladies’ seniors outing, the winners were Mary Collins, Marie A Kelly and Georgina Wright from Pat Williams, Hannagh Guinnane and Mary Brennan.
Ger Hogan and Catherine Minogue are the winners of the November mixed foursomes. In second place were William O’Brien and Brid Hayes.
This weekend, the men’s club will hold their hamper competition. There will be two different tees used in this competition, yellows and white. Competitors may choose which tee to play off.

Lahinch
DECLAN (scratch) and Colm McInerney (11) were the winners of the men’s scotch foursomes Stableford competition at Lahinch on Sunday with 36 points. In the mixed scotch foursomes, Tom Holly (21) and Mary O’Brien (20) won with a similar score.
Don Dillon (16) won the men’s singles on Saturday with 40 points from Gerald Shanahan (16) who scored 38 points and Gerry McGrath (24) who had 36 points.
The ladies’ singles Stableford competition on Monday last was won by Trish Kelleher (25) with 39 points from Anna Glynn (17) with 32 points and Pat Ramsey (22) also with 32 points. Val Shannon won the gross with 22 points.

Woodstock
THE turkey fourball competition at Woodstock at the weekend was won by PJ O’Neill (13) and Jason Dormer (8) with 36 points.
Next weekend’s competition will be a three-ball scramble.

Portumna
THE weekly 13-hole singles Stableford competition was well supported at Portumna when Albert Kelly (8) won the 0-10 category with 32 points. In the 11-14 category, the winner was Vincent Treacy (14) with 28 points. Graham Carty (15) won the 15-18 category with 35 points while the 19 and over category was won by John Hynes (19) with 32 points. TJ O’Callaghan (28) won the seniors section with 30 points.
In the three-ball competition for November, the winners were Patsy Lynch (27) Loughrea, Aiden Diviney (22) Galway Bay, Pat Leech (21) Cregmore with 57 points. In second place with 55 points were Trevor Melbourne (14), Anthony Daly (12) Mountain View and Noel Casey (18) Callan.
This competition continues through the winter and spring months.
Portumna Golf Club entered the GDI (Golf Digest Ireland) top 100 for the first time in 2010 and moves up a further eight places this year to inch even closer to the top 50.

Gort
IN the men’s 18 hole singles competition at Gort at the weekend, the winner was Colin Whelan with 37 points from Eamon Morrissey with a similar score. John Greer won the gross with 33 points.
In last week’s Monday open singles, the winner was John Daly with 38 points.
There will be a singles competition this weekend.
In the ladies’ competition, the winner was Ros Burke with 27 points.

Shannon

PAT Madden (13) and Colm Reidy (14) were the winners of the 15 hole men’s fourball at Shannon at the weekend with 42 points. They had two to spare over Pat Madden (14) and James Morrissey (14) with Kevin Moylan (8) and Declan Carmody (17) in third spot with 39 points. In fourth place with 38 points were Pat Griffin (17) and Denis Bartley (20) with 38 points.
In the Wednesday singles, Brian McMahon (17) was the winner with 36 points from Frank McEvoy (20) with 35 points.

Ennis Seniors

ENNIS seniors held their annual Christmas hampers competition last week. Jimmy McNamara emerged as the winner with 36 points followed by Frank Landy with 35, Paul Higgins with 34, Pat Cahill with 34, Tim McAllister with 34, Luke Coote with 34, Eamonn Corry with 33 and Dick Herbert with 33.

Clare teachers

THE Clare Teachers’ Golf Society Christmas outing will be held at Ennis Golf Club on Saturday. Tee times will be from 10 to 11am. Teams of three are invited to enter. The draw will take place at 9.45am.
