Three youth cafés in Clare have been served up funding from the Dormant Accounts Scheme.
The Fishbowl Youth Café in Cappaduff, Mountshannon will receive €4,000. In Ennis, the Youth Space /Kick Back Café on Carmody Street will receive €3,000, as will the Shannon Leisure Centre in Tullyglass.
Minister for Defence Tony Killeen said the groups fulfil a valuable service in the community.
“In the National Recreation Policy for Young People, published by the Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs in 2007, youth cafés are named as a key need by and for young people.
The policy was based on extensive consultation with young people.
The Office of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs commissioned and launched two policy documents underpinning this measure: Youth Cafés in Ireland: A Best Practice Guide and Youth Café Toolkit: How to Set Up and Run a Youth Café in Ireland.”
Meanwhile, two community groups have been allocated funding under the Seniors Alert Scheme. Kilnaboy Community Development Association is to receive €1,080 while Caring for Carers Clare are to receive €19,870.
Minister Killeen explained the Seniors Alert Scheme provides grant support towards the cost of supplying and installing items of safety and security equipment, including personal monitored alert systems.
“Grant support is available to persons who are aged 65 years or older, of limited means and living alone or with other eligible persons,” he added.
