Trump leaves Clare

PRESIDENT Donald Trump has now left Clare, flying from Shannon Airport earlier this afternoon. Shannon Group Chairman, Rose Hynes was one of the last people to speak to him before his flight left, and she said the trip had been a great boost to the region. “The visit of the American President Donald Trump to Shannon further illustrates the deep ties between the West of Ireland and the United States. “Shannon is the gateway airport to the Wild Atlantic Way and is critical for tourism and indeed, business in this region, not least in the context of the huge US multi-national footprint here. The visit has been a huge sign-post for Shannon, something that will grow awareness of the airport as the premier access to this wonderful part of Ireland.”

“It was so surreal”- Doonbeg youngsters on meeting Trump

“HE was so sound like, he was telling us to stay in school, had we any interest in golf, were there any future Taoiseachs around.” This was one of 16 year old Abbi Shanahan’s memories of meeting President Donald Trump on Friday, as he took a moment from his round of golf at Doonbeg to meet with children from Clohane National School and various members of the Shanahan clan, who were nearby. Abbi’s grandfather, Kevin Shanahan, has land next to the ninth hole, and members of the family went there on Friday as the President was negotiating the course. Her aunt Aideen O’Mahony is Principal of Clohanes National School, and she brought all the children and the school’s staff up there for the occasion. They never expected they would actually get to meet President Trump, but it came about unexpectedly, as Abbi’s 13 year old sister Lucy described. “A secret service person said you can move up a bit, then …

Trump meets Clohanes National School children and staff

PUPILS and staff of Clohanes National School met with President Donald Trump this morning, as he played the ninth hole at Doonbeg. School principal Aideen O’Mahony brought the children to her family’s land adjacent to the golf course, but only expected they would see the President’s group playing, not that they would get to speak to the American leader. “We brought the children back to the hill, just near the ninth green. My parents home is there, so we brought them there and we were standing on a hill on my parents land. We could see them coming up along the ninth fairway and he played the ninth green. Then one of the Secret Service came over to us and said the President wanted to meet the teachers. We went over and met him and shook hands, he said can I get the children here, and then he said, no, I’ll go to them. He walked over to them, shook …

“We’re setting records environmentally” -Trump

IF Leo Varadkar had been hoping for a mild, diplomatic press conference with Donald Trump on Wednesday afternoon, he would have been disappointed. While Brexit is almost universally seen as a historic and catastrophic mistake in Ireland, one which Mr Varadkar and his Government are vehemently opposed to, Mr Trump wasted almost no time before talking it up, as the two spoke to the press in the Shannon Airport terminal. “It’s an honour to be here, we’ll discuss various things, probably you’ll (Varadkar) ask me about Brexit, because I just left some very good people who are very much involved with Brexit as you know. I think it’ll all work out, all work out very well and also for you, with your wall, your border. We have a border situation in the United States and you have one over here. I think they’re both going to work out well. “Both the military and trade are a very big factor and …

Russian gangsters may have teamed up with Trump on Doonbeg, US intel committee hears

RUSSIAN mafia figures may have become involved with Donald Trump in Doonbeg, it has been claimed at a sitting of the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. In an interview with the committee in November, a transcript of which was published this week, researcher Glenn Simpson detailed links between US President Trump and Russian organised crime figures. Mr Simpson also said that in the course of carrying out research on the US President at the time he was a candidate, it had been found that the development of Doonbeg was one of several unusual deals. A former journalist, Mr Simpson works at Washington commercial research firm, Fusion GPS. In the autumn of 2015, it was hired to take an open-ended detailed look at Trump’s business career, litigation history and his relationships with what were described as “questionable people”. Asked about deals of interest involving the now US President, Mr Simpson said, “Some of the things that we have…looked …

Positive views on Trump victory in Doonbeg

WHILE Trump’s victory isn’t being warmly received throughout Europe, in Doonbeg the victory of the village’s biggest investor is being lauded. Local businessman Tommy Tubridy said it is the right result for Doonbeg and Clare. “I think its going to be very good for business, I think it’s going to be very good for the people of West Clare and the whole county in general. “I definitely think it will bring more Americans into West Clare, through Shannon, so it will be a boost for Shannon as well. A lot of his supporters have been coming through there  over the last 12 months. We find that a lot of Trump supporters come to Doonbeg,” he commented on Wednesday morning. He had stayed up all night watching coverage of the election and said numerous journalists had been in touch about the Doonbeg reaction once the result was known. Parish priest Father Joe Haugh was also pleased with the outcome. “He’s already …
