Limerick 2-15 Clare 0-19 Before a crowd of 1,719 Shannonside neighbours Clare and Limerick played an entertaining game in the Munster senior hurling league at Sixmilebridge this evening A strong finish by the visitors resulted in a two point win which keeps their hopes of winning the title alive Clare made the better start and had four points on the scoreboard before Gearoid Hegarty opened Limerick’s accouunt in the seventh minute. Hegarty was replaced before half time after suffering a leg injury. By the mid point of the half just a point separated the sides with the score at 0-5 to 0-4 but then Clare hit four unanswered scores, three coming from John Conlon who had also got the opening score in the third minute. The Clare team to play Limerick in round two of the Munster hurling league on this Wednesday in Sixmilebridge shows eight changes in personnell and a number of positional swtiches from the side which beat Kerry in the opening round last week. Last year’s joint captain returns to the side and he will captain the team from full back. Seadna Morey and Aron Shanagher are named in the same positions they filled last week. Limerick 2-13 Clare 2-9 If the Clare footballers are to make it back to the final of the McGrath Cup, they will have to rely on Waterford beating Limerick on Sunday and hope that scoring difference falls in their favour. Following their opening group game win over Waterford in Meelick, Clare made 10 changes in personnel for Wednesday’s four point defeat to Limerick in Rhebogue. In a game played in bitterly cold conditions and featuring a strong cross field breeze, Limerick, who are coached by former Clare mentor Paudie Kissane, looked sharp and confident. A Darragh Treacy goal helped them to a slender half-time lead, 1-5 to 0-7 and Seamus O’Carroll goal early in the second half was the games decisive score. O’Carroll netted after the ball bounced over the head of Clare full back John Hayes, allowing the Limerick man to steal inside and plant the ball beyond Joe Hayes. THE Clare senior football team to play Limerick on Wednesday evening at St Patrick’s grounds at 7.30pm has been named. The team shows ten changes from that side that defeated Waterford on Sunday with Kilrush duo Darragh Bolton and Gearóid O’Brien making their first starts. If Clare beat Limerick they will advance to their second successive McGrath Cup final. The starting 15 is as follows: Clare: Joe Hayes; Darren Nagle, Kevin Harnett, Martin McMahon; Liam Markham, Gordon Kelly, Cian O’Dea; Gary Brennan and Cathal O’Connor; Shane Brennan, Shane McGrath, Darragh Bolton; Eoin Cleary, Keelan Sexton and Gearóid O’Brien.

Clare will take on Limerick in the first round of both the Munster senior hurling and football championships in 2017 and dates for these meetings will be decided in the coming weeks. The hurling clash will be a semi-final game which means that the winners will be through to the Provincial final and the All-Ireland quarter final. With new managements in charge in both counties, the clash means that Paul Kinnerk who has been a key figure in the success Clare have enjoyed at both under 21 and senior levels in recent years will find himself plotting the downfall of the players he helped steer to Provincial and All-Ireland glory in the saffron and blue as he is the coach to Limerick for 2017. Ironically the football draw is the same as last year with Clare facing Limerick in the opening round for the right to face Kerry in the semi-final. A NEW second level school to serve a catchment area of north Limerick city and into Clare, opened yesterday (Thursday). Thomond Community College is located in the state-of-the-art, former St Nessan’s Community College facility off the Old Cratloe Road.  The college is an amalgamation of Salesian Secondary School and St Nessan’s Community College that will be run under the auspices of the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB). Its initial intake of 96 first years walked through the doors on Thursday starting out their five year second level education. In addition to the new first year intake, fifth year and second year students from Salesian Secondary School have today (Friday) transferred to the Thomond Community College, with all set to retain the teachers for the various subjects they had in the 2015/2016 school year at the Salesians. The First Year intake at the college is up 50% from three years ago when the amalgamation was announced. Overall numbers …

Clare 0-19 Limerick 0-15 Clare booked a place in the All-Ireland senior hurling quarter final when they overcame Limerick at Semple stadium in Thurles but there were a number of anxious monents before their place in the last six was confirmed. A strong second quarter proved decisive as they came from being three points in arrears to open a six point lead by half time. However, Limerick had the aid of the wind in the second half and the piled on the pressure and they had the margin back to three points three times in the last ten minutes. However, they could not get through for the goal they needed to have a chance of causing an upset. The exchanges in the opening quarter suggested that Limerick were going to make matters very difficult for their great rivals and neighbours Clare as they raced 0-4 to 0-1 clear after twelve minutes depite the fact that they were playing against the …

The Clare team to face Limerick in round 2 of the hurling qualifiers is unchanged from that which lined out against Laois in Cusack park last week.  Pat Kelly and Conor McGrath both missed last week’s game due to injury and they are still unavailable while Conor Ryan is also ruled out. The team is  Andrew Fahy (Whitegate); Oisín O’Brien (Clonlara), Pat O’Connor (Tubber), Cian Dillon (Crusheen); Jack Browne (Ballyea), Conor Cleary (Miltown St. Josephs), Brendan Bugler (Whitegate); David McInerney (Tulla), David Reidy (Éire Óg); Colm Galvin (Clonlara), Podge Collins (Cratloe), Tony Kelly (Ballyea); John Conlon (Clonlara) Shane O’Donnell (Éire Óg), Aron Shanagher (Wolfe Tones). The game throws in at 7p.m. at Thurles on this Saturday evening where it is the third game on a programme that commences at 3p.m. with the meeting of Cork and Limerick in the football qualifier.
