Young people told to get moving during National Recreation Week

CLARE Sports Partnership and Clare County Council are encouraging people across the county to get out and participate in physical activity during the third annual National Recreation Week which runs until November 4.

The purpose of the initiative, themed Recreation For Life, is to promote the importance of recreation for young people. This year, members of the public are being encouraged to use some of the many recreational facilities located throughout the County.

“Clare has an array of beautiful outdoor facilities that are accessible and ideal for physical activity. The importance of physical activity in our daily lives cannot be underestimated,” commented Mayor of Clare, Pat Daly.

Mayor Daly added, “Over the years, Clare County Council has been at the forefront of helping to develop these spaces with funding and support for such projects as playgrounds, blue flag beaches, amenity areas, woodland walks, looped walks and cycle paths. We are hoping that the people of Clare will put them to good use collectively during National Recreation Week 2012.”

Catherine O’Hara, community and tourism, Clare County Council, underlined the importance of recreation and physical activity in daily routines.

“It is important that our young people are encouraged to participate in positive recreational activities as such activity can be significant in terms of health, balanced lifestyle, and community development and integration,” she said.

Meanwhile, National Recreational Week is this year encouraging people to consider becoming a community recreational leader.

Clare Sports Partnership is launching their Active Leadership Training Programme to support sustainable community-based physical activity and develop active recreational leaders.

This training programme will take place on Tuesday, November 6 from 6.30pm to 9.30pm in the Gaelscoil Primary School, Ennis. Anyone interested in this training programme should contact James Murrihy, Clare Sports Partnership at 065 6865434 or 087 9627696.
