Winter league concludes at East Clare

In the men’s matchplay qualifier at East Clare, the winner was Kevin Stritch (18) with 42 points from Pat McNamara (12) with 41 and Andrew Moloney (18) with 41.
In the ladies’ 18-hole Stableford, the winner was Peg Hanrahan from Catherine Minogue and Ina Reddan.
The winners of the men’s seniors’ competition were John Farrell, Michael J O’Donoghue and Michael Quigney from Flan Mullane, Jack Manley, Jackie McHugh and John Fielding.

The ladies’ seniors’ competition was won by Nancy Starr, Pat Williams and Louise Delaney from Marie Moloney, Mary Bugler and Breda Reid.

In the winter league final, Leo Mannion’s team emerged victorious on Saturday last. His team had one point to spare over Ger Hogan’s team. In third place was Mike Whelan’s team and finishing fourth was Stephen Moloney’s team.

The members of the winning team were Leo Mannion, Tony Stuart, Flan Clune, Nick Ryan, Siobhán Shanahan and Catherine Murphy. Along the way they had assistance from Bess Fennessy, Martin Crotty and Brendan Magill. Due to an injury to Leo, Brendan Magill substituted for the final and, along with Nick Ryan, brought in 49 points in Saturday’s fourball. Their total score for the three fourballs in the final was 135 points.

Ger Hogan’s team comprised Ger Hogan, Liam Nolan, Brendan Foley, Danny Minogue, Catherine Minogue and Ina Reddan. Their total score was 134 points.

This weekend, the men’s club have a fourball betterball.

Kilkee

At the half way stage of the spring league in Kilkee, the lead is held by Jimmy Murray’s team on 357 points. In second place is Mike Mullane’s team on 355 points followed by David O’Flynn’s team on 347 and Frank Murnane’s team on 346.

George Roche (13) with a score of 37 points had the best individual score. Round 4 will be played this weekend.

The captains for 2013, Ann Boyle and Gerard O’Flynn will have their drive-in this Sunday at 12.30pm, which will be followed by a mixed scramble, with a draw for partners at 1pm.

Lahinch

It’s a big weekend for Lahinch Golf Club with the annual general meeting this Friday and the captains’ drive in on Sunday evening. John Madden (Kinvara) and Aideen McCarthy will begin their terms as club captains, succeeding Ray Hennessy and Nollie McCarthy.

There is a busy weekend of competitions on both courses.

Last Saturday’s singles Stableford competition was won by David Sheedy (7) with 36 points from Bernard O’Brien (17) with a similar score and Colm McInerney (8) with 34 points.

In the men’s fourball competition on Sunday, the winners were Leonard (6) and Ger Shanahan (12) with 39 points.

Shannon

In the Tradaree Cup at Shannon last week, the winner was Donal Walsh (22) with 64 from John Pearse (18) with a similar s core. In third, with 67, was Eoghan O’Dea (7) followed by Liam Lenihan (9) with 68, Sean Flynn (21) with 68, Maurice Murphy (13) with 69, Brian Sherlock (15) with 69 and Brian McMahon (16) with 69. Daniel Brennan (3) won the gross with 72.

There was a big turnout at the weekend for March medal strokeplay competition. The winner was John G O’Connell (18) with 66 from Neil Higgins (17) with 67, John McPhillips (13) with 67, Tom Clancy (20) with 69, Maurice Murphy (13) with 70, Tom Halpin (17) with 70, Declan Carmody (17) with 71 and Dean McDarby (13) with 71. Jamie O’Shea (2) won the gross with 77.

There will be an open singles this Friday, Saturday and Sunday with an open team of four on Bank Holiday Monday.

Portumna

In the men’s foursomes matchplay qualifier at Portumna at the weekend, the leading qualifiers were Gerard Brehony (13) and Mick McGivern (13) with 67 nett. The top 16 pairs qualify for matchplay and the draw is now posted on the noticeboard.

The men’s club will host an open father and son four-ball competition this Friday (Good Friday) and the competition will be followed by a Progressive 25 card game in the clubhouse, hosted by the ladies’ club.
There will be a men’s open four-ball on Saturday and Sunday, while the club open three-ball is continuing throughout March and April.

Dromoland

The mens’ singles’ Stableford competition at Dromoland at the weekend was won by Sean McMahon with 40 points from Kieran Newman with 39 points and Dermot O’Neill with 38 points. Philip O’Sullivan won the category for handicaps 18 and over with 35 points, while the junior section was won by Ryan Foley with 35 points.

This week’s competition will be an 18-hole singles Stableford and, in conjunction with this the Lombard PGA Stableford competition club qualifying round will take place.

The weekend ladies’ competition was won by Mary Arthur with 37 points from Katrina O’Neill with 33 and Beate Porter with 32. The ladies’ seniors’ winner was Mary Galvin.

Ennis

Ennis Seniors’ Group held a team-of-four competition over 14 holes last Thursday. Numbers were down due to inclement weather and the fact that it coincided with first round of the JB Carr competition between Ennis and Spanish Point which Ennis won by 3 1/2 to 1 1/2.

The winners of the team event were Pat Rutherford, Tony Kehoe, Pat McInerney and Noel Pilkington with 74 points from Peadar Cosgrove, Michael Finn, Michael Kerin and Aidan Guilfoyle with 73 with third spot filled by Eamon Corry, Jimmy Kearns, Noel Connellan and Sean Ryan with 67.

In the ladies’ Lions and Cubs competition, the winners were Nuala Healy, Bernie Brooks and Kathleen Frehill from Rita O’Brien, Ann Kehoe and Ann Dunne with third spot filled by Bridget Hoey, Maureen Moloney and Mary Lenihan.

Woodstock

In the spring league singles at Woodstock, the winner was Declan Rigney (18) with 43 points from Noel Kelleher (18) with a similar score with Rory Callinan (11) in third spot with 42 points.
In the club singles, Tom Fogarty (19) was the winner with 41 points from TJ McNamara (15) with 40.

Gort

In the men’s 18-hole Scotch foursomes at Gort at the weekend, the winners were Aidan O’Donnell (12) and Declan O’Halloran (14) with 63 nett from Tommy Madden (11) and David Kehoe (11) with 65 nett. In third place were Michael Ryan (17) and Kieran Reidy (18) with 68.5 nett.

In the Monday open singles last week the winner was Trevor Cummins (6) with 39 points from Paul Duffy (14) from with a similar score. In third spot was John Moloney (19) with 38 points followed by Jerry Leahy (9) also with 38 points. The gross was won by Ronan Higgins (7) with 31 points.

On Friday there will be an 18-hole open singles with a similar competition on Saturday and Sunday while the weekly open continues on Monday. The ladies will also have an open singles.

Spanish Point

The winner of the nine-hole reentry at Spanish Point on Monday was David Keane with a score of 21 points. The winner of the seniors’ open on Tuesday was Tony Crowley with 37 points from Len Wilson. The winners of the weekend foursomes were Christy Mohally and Martin Davis with a score of 37 points.

This weekend the members will compete for the Easter hamper. The Spanish Point Seniors were narrowly beaten by Ennis in the JB Carr competition.

Kilrush

In the ladies’ seniors’ outing at Kilrush last Tuesday, the winners were Anne McMahon, Dolores Reidy and Agnes Shannon from Mary Collins, Lucy Blake and Maura McSwiggan with third spot filled by Anne Hogan, Bernadette Eastham and Marion Brennan.

Last week’s men’s seniors outing was won by Paddy Carmody, Noel Cooney and Ollie McNamara with 71 points from Michael Ryan, Murt Collins, Noel Thornton and Maurice Roche with 68 points. In third spot were Leo Harvey, Sean Moran and Seamus O’Doherty with 64 points.

Last week’s ladies’ singles’ winner was Marion Brennan with 26 points from Joan O’Malley with 24. The men’s singles winner was Finbarr McMahon with 28 points.

In the spring league final, the winners of section one were Tony McMahon’s team with 79 points from Tom Prendeville’s team on 75 and Anthony Burke’s team on 70. In section two, Murt Collins’ team won with 64.

The spring league weekly individual winners were John Robinson with 31 points (week one), Finbarr McMahon with 32 points (week two), Anne Coen with 29 pints (week three) and John Robinson with 33 points (week four).

Entries for the Paddy Shannon men’s matchplay (handicap 18 and over) are now being accepted.

On Friday, there will be a scramble with the draw at 4pm. There will be a singles competition on Saturday and Sunday with reentry allowed on Sunday, while on Monday, there will be a scramble with the draw at 2.30pm.

Lissycasey GAA

Kilrush will be the venue for a golf classic in aid of Lissycasey GAA on Saturday, May 17, with some times available on Friday afternoon, May 16.

A timesheet is now in operation for the team-of-four event and those wishing to book a time should contact Declan Kelly at 086 8540652 or Robert McMahon at 086 3347768.

Clare hurlers

The annual golf classic in aid of the Clare hurlers will take place at Shannon on Friday and Saturday, May 3 and 4. Further details can be obtained from the supporters club chairman, Michael O’Neill at 086 3449249.

Cranny-Coolmeen

Spanish Point was the venue for an outing for the Cranny-Coolmeen society last week when the winners, with 84 points, were Robert McMahon, Denis Cahill, Ray Shannon. They were followed by Des Murphy, Mike Daly and Agnes Shannon with 77 points with third spot filled by Ollie McNamara, Francis Kelly, Paul Kenny with 75 points.

Kilfenora GAA
Kilfenora GAA Club hosted a very successful golf classic at Lahinch on Saturday last when 25 teams competed.

The winning team comprised Michael Hehir, Eric Murrihy, Brendan Coyne and Kevin Hynes. In second place were John O’Gorman, John Casey, Pa O’Looney and Pat Daly with third spot filled by Pa and Michael Ryan, John Williams and Kieran Reidy.

At the presentation of prizes, Kilfenora GAA officials paid tributer to all who helped make the event a success.

Pitch and putt

Doolin Pitch and Putt Club was the venue for last Sunday’s Clare Cup competition hosted by the Clare County Board. The course was in excellent condition and again provided a true test to all players with cold windy conditions adding to the challenge.

With players participating from Clare, Limerick, Cork, Tipperary and Kerry, it was Bruff’s Liam O’Donovan who claimed the overall prize on the day with an excellent under-par score in the conditions.

In the other prize categories, Tadhg Murphy from St Anne’s Club in Cork claimed the senior section, Mick Walsh from Parteen won the intermediate prize, Corey O’Callaghan from Pfizers’ club in Cork was the winner the junior section and Helen Daly from the Cill Na Móna club claimed the ladies ‘section.

The Cill Na Mona will host an open competition this Friday when the tee will be available from 4pm to 5pm.
