Photograph by John KellyONE of the country’s best-known regional journalists, Tony Mulvey, begins his 51st year of service with The Clare Champion this week. Tony’s 50-year association with the newspaper was marked at a function hosted by the newspaper in the Bunratty Manor Hotel last Friday night. Colleagues and retired staff joined Tony, his wife Margaret and their family in celebration of his remarkable achievement.

Tony, who began work as a junior reporter on October 5, 1959, has, without question, been the face of The Clare Champion over the past five decades. His coverage of political, farming, social and sporting events has brought him to every parish in the county many times over.
His reporting, from major stories to brief local notes, has provided the people of County Clare with a remarkable historical record.  His work stands as contemporaneous observations on events as they unfolded week after week in the county over half a century.
Two years ago, Clare County Council honoured Tony with a civic reception to acknowledge his contribution to journalism and his role in highlighting the work of local authorities.
At last week’s function to honour him, Clare Champion managing director John Galvin paid tribute to Tony’s people and writing skills, a combination that has made him one of the best journalists in the business. He described Tony as a great ambassador for the newspaper.
To mark the occasion, John presented Tony with a special edition Clare Champion front page, featuring contributions from colleagues, while Shelly Galvin presented a bouquet of flowers to Tony’s wife, Margaret.
