Tenors to show their range of material

THE Three Tenors, Declan Kelly, David Martin and Ray O’Hare, are coming to Glór on Saturday, June 15.

They will be accompanied on the night by choirs from St Aidan’s National School and Barefield National School.

Speaking to The Clare Champion, Declan said it’s not their first time at the Ennis venue. “We’ve actually been in Glór before, twice I think, but it’s been a couple of years since we’ve been there and the line-up has changed since then. We had a new guy join us – Ray O’Hare.”

He has been with the group for the last five years and he says they are still quite busy, despite the downturn. “Some venues are very difficult to fill but the other side of it is that some people just want to go out and have a good night’s entertainment.”

They have been doing some work overseas and plan to do more. “We have been to London and individually we’ve all gone to America and we’re working on a tour there, either this summer or next summer.”
They have quite a broad range of materials, Declan claims, “We have some opera and some Neopolitan songs and a lot of Irish, things like a Song for Ireland, Courting in the Kitchen, Raglan Road, Dublin in the Rare Oul’ Times; some of it is in the form of a medley.

“We also have a tribute to Elvis and there are songs from Simon and Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson and Leonard Cohen. It’s quite a good crossover and we sing some solos as well. We have a guest violinist who plays a few numbers on her own and accompanies us for the rest of it.”

He says a lot of work has to be done to get things right technically. “Even though we are three tenors, we have slightly different styles of voice and it’s just about making sure they blend.
“Because we don’t have a conductor, as such, you have to work out how you’re going to sing things and stay together. We try to all share the harmony and we have to work that out.”
