Half a loaf is considerably better than no bread as following the postponement of last year’s secondary adult club competitions, a condensed county league schedule is set to commence this bank holiday Monday. Four of the seven football leagues begin their campaigns on the first day possible of the government’s Covid-19 guidelines, with all divisions in both football and hurling limited to five matches which are based on last year’s fixtures. With no promotion or relegation at stake, the county leagues are primarily intended as a reintroduction to playing action following a minimum eight month absence. However, while clubs will be without their inter-county contingents, there’s still silverware on offer to retain a competitive edge remains intact as following the completion of the group stages, the top team in each division will be crowned champions. SPORTING nostalgia has certainly been popular throughout the pandemic, with All-Ireland finals and World Cup ties being broadcast on various channels. On a very local level, Wolfe Tones have been putting footage of old club games online every Sunday evening and it has proven very popular. Club officer Paul Hogan has led the initiative and said, “With the fact the GAA was gone, we just wanted to add something. Our aim too was to preserve as many Wolfe Tones games as we could. We’ve tried to cover all four bases of ladies’ football, camogie, hurling and Gaelic football. We’re fairly eating through them over the last few weeks. If there’s anyone in the county with old Wolfe Tones games, we’d be delighted to get them up on YouTube.” Many of the games shown have finished with Wolfe Tones hoisting silverware. “It has been mostly finals but the first game was a Munster semi-final against Patrickswell. Wolfe Tones will face the reigning champions in the first round of both the Clare senior hurling and football championships in 2017. The Shannon club’s name was last out of the drum in both draws which were made at the February meeting of Clare GAA tonight. The footballers will face Kilmurry-Ibrickane while the hurlers will take on All-Ireland finalists Ballyea. Delegates rejected the masters fixtures proposal to have the first round of the football championship on the first weekend in May opting instead for a June 10/11 or June 17/18 date. The first round of the hurling championship will go ahead on the weekend of May 13/14. The draw for the under 21 hurling championship will take place on this Thursday night at Clare GAA headquarters in Clareabbey after a number of clubs asked to put their case to the CCC as to why they should be in a lower grade. A SHANNON couple have contacted Gearóid Ó Maoilmhichíl, the GAA national children’s officer in Croke Park, in relation to an incident involving their son at an underage game in Clare last August. In a tournament organised by the gardaí, Seán and Valerie O’Callaghan allege that their then 13-year-old son was hit by an adult, following an altercation between him and an opposing player. The altercation involving the two players led to their son receiving a red card, which the parents say they have no issue with. “Our son got a red card. As he was walking away, a man ran onto the pitch and punched my son in the back of the head and hit him in the eye. Kyle was on the ground. Gardaí and parents then went onto the pitch,” Mrs O’Callaghan explained. Their son later received medical treatment following the incident. The matter was referred by gardaí to the DPP, who confirmed about six weeks ago that …

THE Clare and Munster intermediate hurling champions will face their stiffest test to date when they line out against Kilkenny and Leinster counterparts, Bennettsbridge, in the All-Ireland semi-final at St Rynagh’s GAA Club in Banagher, County Offaly on Saturday at 2pm. Bennettsbridge go into the game on the back of a two and a half year unbeaten run. A junior club in 2014, after two final losses, they captured the Kilkenny title before adding the provincial and All-Ireland titles. They took up where they had left off when the 2015 season began and they went through the Kilkenny intermediate campaign unbeaten to regain senior status after 32 years. Since that breakthrough, they have added the Leinster title and, this week, they seek to keep their winning run going when they face Wolfe Tones. Wolfe Tones 4-12 Kilmoyley, Kerry 2-6 Clare champions WolfeTones booked a Munster intermediate hurling championship semi-final date with Bruree from Limerick when they proved too strong for Kerry senior champions, Kilmoyley at Sixmilebridge on Saturday afternoon. The winners dominated throughout Ssturday’s tie and were two goals clear inside the opening ten minutes after Aaron Shanagher and Declan O’Rourke had found the net. Shanagher goaled in the tenth minute and O’Rourke’s major came three minutes later when his strike from 60m slipped through the hand of visiting goalie Aidan McCabe. At half time they were 3-8 to 1-4 ahead, the third goal coming from team captain Aaron Cunningham just before the short whistle. Clare senior panelist Cunningham also scored the fourth goal when he converted a penalty awarded against visiting full back Sean Dowling who earned a straight red card for his tackle on Cunningham. Bonfires blazed across the parishes of Shannon and Coolmeen-Cranny on Saturday evening after Wolfe Tones and Coolmeen were crowned intermediate hurling and junior A football champions repectively. Goals proved decisive and Wolfe Tones won back senior status after a year in the lower division when they defeated Broadford at O’Garney Park in Sixmilebridge. Two goals in each half proved too much for Broadford who, despite scoring seventeen points, were five adrift when the final whistle sounded. The winners got off to a dream start with a Kevin McCafferty goal as early as the fourth minute. Broadford rallied and drew level by the thirteenth minute and they will be disappointed that they weren’t ahead at this point but poor shooting proved costly. Ahead by a point after twenty minutes the winners struck again and Jack Cunningham found the net, a score that helped them to a half time lead on the score of 2-4 to 0-7. The minor A hurling championship title holders are out of this year’s competition. At rain lashed O’Garney park in Sixmilebridge on Friday evening Kilmaley had to give best to a stronger and better balanced Wolfe Tones outfit. When the final whistle sounded the Shannon club had four points to spare, 0-16 to 1-9 and they were full value for their win. However, they will have to wait a while to learn who will be their opponents in the final as the game between Inagh-Kilnamona and the Broadford-Smith O’Briens amalgamation was cancelled as the pitch at Shannon wasn’t playable. Wolfe tones led by the minimum margin, 0-8 to 0-7, at half time and they were a little unlucky not to have had a couple of goals at this stage. They were four points clear early in the second half but a goal from Padraig McNamara brought Kilmaley to within a point. However, the holders were unable to break down a strong …
