An unchanged Clare team from that which started in Cork last week has been named to face Waterford in round 2 of the Munster senior hurling championship at Cusack Park on Sunday. As was the case in the lead up to the Cork game, there has been much speculation that there will be some changes and while this may stil prove to be the case, the team named on this Friday evening is the same as that which was named seven days ago. Positional changes occurred before the throw in last week and the same is expected on Sunday. CLARE Marts in Ennis is set to be turned into a car park – but not permanently. The Lions Club of Ennis has secured the Quin Road site to provide parking on this Sunday and Sunday, June 17, to cater for the massive crowds expected to turn out for both the Munster Hurling Championship round robin games in Cusack Park, and the Fleadh Nua. As well as providing 500 parking spaces for Clare’s hurling and traditional music fans, the venture will also raise funds for local charities. On Sunday, Clare will take on Waterford, while on June 17 the home team will take on the Shannonsiders for a fixture that traditionally packs out the county grounds. James O’Loughlin, of the Lions Club of Ennis, explains that the money raised from the parking will go towards the club’s ongoing charitable work locally, such as the annual old folks’ holiday and Christmas food appeal. “The proceeds from the parking will all go …

While Clare’s starting team for what is now a crucial championship tie against Waterford on Sunday (3.30pm throw-in) will not be named before Friday evening, it’s likely to feature one or two changes. Although not introduced until the end of normal time last Sunday in Cork, Jamie Shanahan is believed to be strongly in contention for a place in the first 15 this week. The Construction Industry Federation has welcomed the €115 billion investment in infrastructure announced by Government today (Friday) as a “potential gamechanger” for the southern region. The announcement was made as part of the government’s 10-year public capital programme and National Planning Framework. Regional CIF director, Conor O’Connell stated, “Today’s announcement could represent a game-changer for the southern region and for the Irish economy. Cities like Cork, Limerick and Waterford and our regional towns can be developed into a dynamic regional economy in the south that can counter-balance the irish economy’s overdependence on the greater Dublin area.The construction industry in the region has significant capacity to deliver the essential housing, infrastructure and specialist buildings underpinning the ambition outlined in the National Planning Framework.” Mr O’Connell said the €115 billion outlined will give construction companies in the region the confidence to invest in their businesses again and we expect to see significant increases in activity across all our sectors including civil engineering, …

Clare 2-18 Waterford 1-9 ON Saturday in Meelick, 10 Clare footballers started their first game for the county and while Waterford deteriorated as the season opening McGrath Cup game wore on, several Clare players suggested that they will definitely be of help in adding depth to the league and championship panel. When the game was a contest in the opening half, Eimhin Courtney was superb, kicking 0-4 from play and moving impressively. In the opposite corner of the full forward line, Conor Finnucane also demonstrated his ability and if both can keep that up, they will definitely be viable options as will full forward, Gearóid O’Brien.
