A post morten examination is to be caried out on the body of a young man taken from the sea in Kilkee earlier today. Gardai, who are continuing with their inquires into the death of the man in his 20s, believe it may have been a tragic accident and that the man may have fallen into the water during the night. The alarm was raised at around 8.15am when emergency services received a report of a body in the water not far from the beach.  The Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard was alerted and responded to the scene along with gardaí. Shortly before 9am, the coast guard boat crew recovered the body from the water. The remains have since been taken to University Hospital Limerick where a postmortem examination is to take place.

Taking part in a cancer clinical trial at University Hospital Limerick was a last option fora Clare woman but one which had allowed her to see her children grow up. This was outlined by Marie to highlight International Clinical Trials Day on Friday and to encourage patients to sign up for suitable trials. Members of the public are invited to UHL this Friday to find out more about cancer trials from staff attached to the Clinical Trials Unit, Cancer Services, at UHL. They will be running an information stand from 11am to 1pm in the main hospital concourse as part of a national campaign co-ordinated by ICORG, which co-ordinates most cancer trials in Ireland. UHL is one of 18 hospital-based cancer trials centres in Ireland and is the only one in the Mid-West region. A man in his 60’s died after the flight on which he was travelling made an emergency medical diversion to Shannon Airport yesterday. The man was a passenger on a Royal Jordanian flight which was enroute from Chicago to Amman. The Boeing  jet was about 200 kilometres northwest of Shannon when the crew advised controllers of the medical emergency. HSE ambulance paramedics and a doctor were waiting for the flight when it touched down. The passenger was  pronounced dead shortly afterwards. The man’s body was removed to University Hospital Limerick for a post mortem examination.

UL Hospitals’ Group is seeking to strengthen its relationships with patients by setting up a new patient council. The purpose of a patient council is to establish a group of people who have an interest in the hospital group to plan and advise on improving services for patients and families who use any of the six hospitals across the group. The objective is to include people from Clare, Tipperary and Limerick, who are interested in a wide range of specialities and who have experiences of different services as patients or family members. “Establishing partnerships with patients and their families is essential to improving the quality, safety and cost effectiveness of health care in the mid west region. A former Ennis Hospital manager has been appointed to a new role that will see him oversee the management of some medical facilities. Frank Keane has become the new general manager of unscheduled care, which includes managing the emergency department in University Hospital Limerick (UHL), which experiences almost daily overcrowding. It also involves overseeing improvements in the delivery of services in the Local Injuries Units in Ennis and Nenagh and the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) in Ennis, Nenagh and UHL. It is a case of the wheel coming full circle for the Ennis resident, who started his career as a emergency medical technician in 1992 and will now be in charge of the ED in UHL, where paramedics bring patients from the Mid-West for life-saving treatment. THE University Maternity Hospital on the Ennis Road in Limerick is to be relocated to Dooradoyle, with the provision of state-of-the-art medical facilities. The announcement was part of the Government’s €27 billion capital plan announced today (Tuesdsay). “I am delighted that under the Government’s six year capital plan Limerick will get a new maternity hospital, located on the main University Hospital site at Dooradoyle. This will mark a new era for maternity care in Limerick and surrounding counties and is very positive news,” commented Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan, following the Government announcement. The current maternity hospital, which is also known by its former name of St Munchin’s, was commissioned in the 1960s, having been designed to cater for about 3,000 annual births. In recent years, it has dealt between 4,600 and 5,500 annual births. It is the fifth largest of the 19 maternity units in the country. The Midwestern Cancer Information and Support Centre at University Hospital Limerick has commenced its ‘Strides for Life’ Programme, a 15 week walking programme developed by the Irish Cancer Society for cancer survivors. The Cancer Information and Support Centre, located in the grounds of the University Hospital Limerick offers patients and their families’ practical information and emotional support in a friendly environment. Twenty cancer survivors from across the Midwest have signed up to take part in the ‘Strides for Life’ programme, which was developed specifically by the Irish Cancer Society for cancer support services around the country. ‘Strides for Life’ brings participants through a structured walking programme, gradually increasing fitness and training over its course. The programme aims to bring the individual to a level of fitness where they can help reduce their risk of a recurrence of the cancer and improve their health and quality of life. A woman is recovering in hospital after she sustained a head injury when she slipped on rocks at Clahanes, near Liscannor, yesterday evening. The woman in her 50’s had been walking along the shoreline when the accident happened. The alarm was raised by a passerby who called the ambulance service. The Irish Coast Guard was requested to assist and the Doolin unit of the volunteer service assisted paramedics recover the patient and take her across the rocks to a waiting ambulance before being removed to University Hospital Limerick.
