CRUSHEEN teenager Delia Keary has become the fourth Clare person to die as a result of road traffic accidents in recent days. The 18 year old had been a passenger in a car which collided with a truck at Wards Cross near Abbeyfeale on Friday evening. 19 year old Gary Kelly from Ennis died at the scene while Delia was taken to University Hospital, Limerick for treatment. However Gardai have confirmed that she passed away on Saturday night. Newcastle West Gardai are investigating the incident and they have appealed to witnesses to contact them on 069 20650, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station. Also the funeral takes place on Monday of Clare native Paul Hannon, who lost his life after he was involved in a collision with a car while cycling in Dublin on Friday morning. A MAN brought to hospital after a dramatic rescue from the River Fergus yesterday remains in a critical condition at University Hospital, Limerick. Emergency services were called to the scene at 11.25am after a man entered the water at the Maid of Eireann, near the Mill Road. Clare County Fire and Rescue Services were mobilised to respond to the river rescue. Three units of Ennis Fire Brigade attended the scene with An Garda Síochána and the national ambulance service. The Fire Brigade’s Swiftwater Rescue Team effected the rescue of the individual with one member entering the water, and the remainder of the team putting backup safety procedures in place. Once out of the water, fire service personnel assisted the national ambulance service in providing emergency medical care.

A postmortem is due to be carried out today (Friday) on the body of a man recovered from a canal in Killaloe yesterday morning. The alarm was raised before 9am when a person was seen in the water close to Killaloe bridge. The Irish Coast Guard was alerted and the Killaloe unit launched their boat and made their way to the scene. Other members of the team travelled to the scene by road. The boat crew located and recovered the body from the water and the man was subsequently pronounced dead. The man’s body was removed to University Hospital Limerick. Believed to be in his 60s, the man had not been reported missing.

Strict visiting restrictions remain in place at University Hospital Limerick following an outbreak of influenza. As of 1pm on Tuesday, December 20, there were 10 confirmed cases of seasonal influenza in the hospital. The Health Protection and Surveillance Centre has urged people in high-risk groups to get vaccinated as the number of reported cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) in Ireland has increased in the past week. The figures for the Mid-West are above the national baseline for influenza-like illness. UL Hospitals Group has asked that members of the public respect the current restrictions on visiting at UHL. Visiting is restricted to one person per patient during visiting hours only, 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 9pm. In recent days the hospital had advised visiting was limited to the critically unwell and to parents of sick children only. The restrictions have been amended in response to feedback from patients/families and in consultation with the infection prevention and control team. It remains …

UL Hospitals Group has asked that members of the public respect the current restrictions on visiting at UHL. Only those visiting critically unwell patients and parents visiting sick children are unaffected by the restrictions. The Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter has completed the evacuation of a crewman from an Irish fishing vessel located 160 miles West off Loop Head. The injured man has been taken on-board the Coast Guard helicopter, R115 and will be transferred to University Hospital Limerick where it was due to arrive at midday. The operation was coordinated by the Coast Guard Marine Rescue Centre in Valentia who were initially alerted by the fishing vessel, via HF (hi frequency long range) radio. Weather conditions on scene were described as challenging with north westerly winds exceeding 30 Knots but well within the operating limits of the Coast Guard helicopter.

A post mortem is due to be carried out today on the body of a woman taken from the sea near the Cliffs of Moher yesterday evening. Emergency services were alerted at around 5pm when walkers on the cliff trail spotted the body in the water near O’Brien’s Tower. The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard launched their rescue boat and made their way to the scene and made a successful recovery at around 6.15pm. The woman’s remains were brought back to their boathouse in Doolin and later removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination is expected to be carried out later today.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has condemned the gross overcrowding and the compromised ability of nurses to provide acceptable and safe care to all patients within University Hospital Limerick. “There is no doubt that the level of overcrowding today with 66 patients on trolleys and on extra beds on wards is unprecedented and is a serious crisis,” remarked INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Mary Fogarty . “INMO members do not accept that management at the hospital are robustly managing all of the available bed capacity to meet the demands of emergency patients who are deemed to need admission. It is incumbent on the management team as an employer and in governing the hospital to ensure that the hospital is safe for staff and patients and this is not the case. This is increasingly worrying for our members as clinical care of patients is compromised and there are high levels of stress being experienced by nurses daily. In recent weeks …
