Clare heritage groups to benefit from major funding allocation

HERITAGE projects across county Clare are to benefit to the tune of more than €120,000 of State funding. Community groups from Spanchilhill to Spanish Point will receive funding from The Heritage Council. Initiatives to received support range from the preservation of local monuments to the creation of audio guides for those with visual or literacy issues. Green Party Senator Róisín Garvey outlined the full list of projects to benefit from the funding boost. “As spokesperson for Rural Development, I am delighted to announce securing funding of €120,621 in support of Heritage activity all over Clare and across a wide range of events and topics,” she said. “Thanks to my Green Party Colleague, Minister Malcolm Noonan, for the funding. Online launch for Clare’s holy wells project

A LABOUR of love has resulted in hundreds of Clare’s holy wells being documented and surveyed, with their details to be made available online.  The Clare Holy Wells Project, supported by Clare County Council and funded by The Heritage Council and Creative Ireland, will be formally launched via Zoom on St Brigid’s Day, Tuesday, February 1 at 7pm. The event will celebrate the efforts to survey and document 237 holy wells in Clare. In recent years, surveyors Michael Houlihan and Tony Kirby produced a fascinating survey of a part of local heritage that holds a special place in the hearts of many Clare people. For the first time, information on all of Clare’s known holy wells is gathered in one place. The webpage can be searched by region, as well as alphabetically. Clare’s Heritage Week programme expanded

The National  Heritage Week 2014 programme  in County Clare has been expanded to  bring to  more than 80 the number of events taking place from this Saturday through to Sunday, August 31, it has been announced. Co-ordinated by Clare County Council and The Heritage Council, with support from the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, and Fáilte Ireland, the annual initiative will once again focus on Clare’s built, natural and cultural heritage. Some of the highlights of Heritage Week 2014 include a commemoration of the life of submarine inventor and Liscannor native John P Holland, a tour of tower houses around Shannon Town, a lecture on the life of an Kilrush-born Boer War General Sir Thomas Kelly-Kenny, a Victorian Heritage Walk around Kilkee, a tour of Lisdoonvarna’s famous restorative waters, and a recital of traditional Irish tunes on the uilleann pipes by Matt Horsely at Ennis Friary. Seventy-five ways to celebrate Clare’s heritage

A total of 75 events ranging from nature walks to history lectures will take place across County Clare during National Heritage Week 2014 from August 23 to 31. Co-ordinated by Clare County Council and The Heritage Council with support from the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht and Fáilte Ireland, the initiative will focus on Clare’s built, natural and cultural heritage.
