Sinn Féin red faced over leaflet “mistake”

Sinn Féin election strategists in Dublin have been left red faced after mistakenly publishing a leaflet claiming their Clare General Election candidate, Noeleen Moran is a local county councillor. Householders in Clare were left feeling somewhat confused when a general election pamphlet seeking a No. 1 from “Cllr Noeleen Moran” was dropped through their letterbox. Although the Ballyvaughan woman secured 1,050 votes in the last 2014 Local Elections when she ran as a Sinn Féin candidate in the West Clare Municipal District, she was not elected to Clare County Council. Speaking to the Clare Champion on the canvass trail on Friday afternoon, Ms Moran described the reference as a “typographical mistake”. The election leaflet also stated the information was printed by local Sinn Féin Councillor, Mike McKee, whose Shannon address was also included. However, Councillor McKee insisted that he did not print these leaflets, which were published by party headquarters in Dublin. Councillor McKee explained his name was included …

Sinn Féin name general election candidate

Sinn Féin has selected Noeleen Moran as a candidate to contest the next General Election in County Clare. Ms Moran, who stood for the party at the local elections in May, was selected at a party convention t in the West County Hotel. Ms Moran said, “I am both proud and honoured to be selected to represent Sinn Féin in Clare. Locally, the party has been growing steadily and we are now in very good shape. We are in a very strong position to contest the General Election whenever it may come. “The people of Clare have been subjected to years of austerity under the reign of Government representatives. It is disgraceful what the ordinary people of this country have had to endure under the current Government and the Fianna Fáil-led administration that came before it. The savage cuts to our health system and other vital frontline services have been deplorable. “It is time for change. There is a lot …

Mayor of Clare Joe Arkins

No white smoke for Mayor of Clare

A negotiating team representing the political parties and independents on the new 28-member Clare County Council will meet for the eighth time this Wednesday evening to try to broker an agreement on the rotation of  the Mayor of Clare position. The situation must be resolved in this for the annual general meeting of the council on this Friday afternoon. In the past, the post of Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council was retained within the majority party but for the past decade or so, the position [now mayor] has rotated among parties and independents. The outgoing mayor, Joe Arkins lost his seat in the recent local elections, an outcome that was due in no small measure to the redrawing of the electoral areas. It is understood that Fianna Fáil will have two terms  and at the crux of the matter is how to strike a balance of sharing the role of mayor between the seven independent, joined with the one Sinn Féin councillor, …

By Dan Danaher THE four main political parties have been accused of wasting hundreds of thousands of euro on electioneering for European elections, which would be better spent on delivering community projects throughout Clare. That’s the verdict of Richard Cahill, who entered the Euro South race on Monday, just before the close of nominations, to become the only new Clare candidate in this constituency. The Sixmilebridge community activist, who doesn’t have any money to spend on a traditional campaign, believes the main parties – Fine Gael, Labour, Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin – are squandering money on posters, election fliers and advertising, while some people are struggling to put food on the table. “There are people who are wondering where they are going to get food to feed their family. Political representatives are spending hundreds of thousands of euro on posters and election literature. They are saying they are true representatives; they must be joking. This type of spending is …
