SHANNON Airport is set to record a decrease in its number of passengers this year, unless there is a late improvement. Figures for the first three-quarters of 2017 show the number of passengers was 5.2% less than for the first three-quarters of 2016. It is a disappointing state of affairs, almost five years after its separation from the Dublin Airport Authority. According to the CSO statistics, 1,257,996 passengers were handled by Shannon in the first nine months of the year. This was almost 70,000 below the figure of 1,327,313 for the same period of 2016. It was also lower than the 1,297,080 that travelled through the airport in the first nine months of 2015. When Shannon was separated from Dublin, its business plan was to have 2.3 million passengers per annum in 2017, a figure the airport is very far away from achieving. The chief executive of the Shannon Group has hit out at the Government’s aviation policy, which is facilitating the dominance of Dublin Airport. Addressing members of Clare County Council at their November meeting, Shannon Group CEO Matthew Thomas said that aviation policy in Ireland is leading towards the country having only a single airport, in Dublin. Mr Thomas provided figures that showed Dublin Airport had increased its market share from 72% in 2005 to 87% this year and was increasing its dominance at an incredibly fast pace. He said that, despite the growing market across the island, Shannon Airport’s share had fallen from 5.4% to 5.1% since it achieved independence from the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). Nonetheless, the airport had managed to increase passenger numbers by 25%. SHANNON man Andrew Kelly has been elected president of the European Regions Airline Association, a representative body for 53 airlines and 22 airports, including Shannon. Director of corporate affairs at ASL Aviation, Mr Kelly is a past pupil of St Senan’s National School and St Patrick’s Comprehensive. He still regularly visits Shannon for work and to see family members. Mr Kelly has had a varied career, which began as a journalist. “I worked in the Limerick Echo first and then The Clare News. NO explosives were found after a suspicious device was examined by an Explosives Ordnance Disposal team at Shannon Airport on Monday evening. An adapted phone in the hand luggage of a Bangladeshi man who was on a Kuwait-New York flight aroused suspicion at Shannon’s US pre-clearance facility around 4pm. The suspect phone was then subject to a chemical examination, which is used to test for certain chemicals. It tested positive, but such a result can also be returned if an object has been exposed to certain substances, not linked to explosives. Following the test the smoking areas at Shannon were evacuated for a short period of time and the device was brought to a safe location outside the airport. Gardai summoned the Explosives Ordnance Disposal team from Cork and following further examination they determined that there were no explosives present.     Clare County Council is warning peoploe to avoid exposed coastal locations throughout Friday night and Saturday due to forecast stormy conditions. A Status Orange wind warning has been issued for the Banner County as Storm Brian is expected to peak early on Saturday with winds at their strongest along the coast. Met Éireann says southeast winds of mean speeds 55 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km/h, will veer west or northwest and strengthen further during the night, reaching orange level with mean speeds of 65-80 km/h with gusts 110-130 km/h. Winds will ease from orange warning level to yellow warning level during Saturday evening. It also warns there is a risk of coastal flooding, which has placed communities in West and North Clare on red alert. Shannon Airport will remain open throughout Monday, despite the potential impact of Hurricane Ophelia. A Shannon Airport spokeswoman stressed the safety of passengers and staff is its first priority. The spokesperson asked passengers to contact their airline with regard to updates on schedule changes for Monday. However, at this point the airport is aware of the following flight cancellations: Aer Lingus Regional EI3675/3672 from and to Edinburgh and EI 3639/3638 from and to Birmingham, and London/Heathrow EI381 and EI384 with Aer Lingus.
