NEW Clare TD Cathal Crowe has said that a major investment package will be required to support Shannon Airport, after the Covid-19 pandemic abates. Before the pandemic Dublin Airport was very much dominant over all the other Irish airports, with economic consequences for other parts of the country. Deputy Crowe said that Fianna Fáil has already written to the European Commissioner for Mobility seeking a discussion on the European response to the crisis, and to examine means to support Irish airports and airlines. As a result of routine operations, Revenue officers in Shannon and Cork airports seized seven separate packages containing the controlled drug Kratom, worth a total estimated value of €66,000. Some €41,000 of the total was seized at Shannon. The drugs were in powder and capsule form and were destined for Clare, Cork and Galway. Kratom comes from a tropic tree, grown in South East Asia. At low doses it has cocaine-like stimulant effects, but at higher doses it can have sedative-narcotic effects. It is either chewed, smoked or made into a tea and long term effects of its use can include psychosis. The controlled drugs were in powder and capsule form and were destined for addresses in Clare, Cork and Galway. Investigations are ongoing. A second Qatar Airways cargo plane carrying vital medical equipment from China landed at Shannon Airport yesterday afternoon. The cargo was the second consignment to arrive in Shannon in under a week. Among the medical equipment on board were ICU ventilators, masks and thermometers for distribution to frontline workers around Ireland in the fight against COVID-19. This follows a delivery of ICU ventilators and hospital beds which arrived in Shannon on a Qatar plane on April 3. Among the medical equipment on board were ICU ventilators and hospital beds for distribution to hospitals around Ireland in the fight against COVID-19. A flight from Paris to Chicago diverted to Shannon Airport on Sunday evening, when an unclaimed mobile phone was found on board. The flight diverted to Shannon and remained there for two hours. It is believed that the phone was left on the aeroplane following a previous flight. The Paris-Chicago flight subsequently left for the US at 7pm on Sunday evening.

CLARE is bracing itself for the arrival of Storm Lorenzo on Thursday with Met Éireann issuing a status orange weather warning for the county. Winds up up to 130km/h, and even higher in coastal regions, are expected with storm surges producing coastal flooding and damage. The orange weather warning, for Clare, Galway, Limerick, Cork, Mayo and Kerry comes into effect from 6pm Thursday until Friday at 3am. There is also a status yellow rainfall alert for the entire country from 9am on Thursday until 6am on Friday. According to Met Éireann south-westerly winds veering westerly will reach mean speeds 65 to 80km/h with gusts generally of 100 to 130km/h, higher in coastal regions. Storm surges will produce coastal flooding and damage. The main impacts will include disruptive winds, falling trees and flooding.
