Eoin Brennan previews Scariff Ogonnelloe’s Munster Camogie Championship battle with Iniscarra With the last three Munster winners vying for honours, the 2021 Munster Senior Camogie Club Championship is set to be the ultimate battle of the champions over the next fortnight. With Drom & Inch pipping Inagh-Kilnamona to the post to eventually claim the 2020 version only six weeks earlier, the Tipperary champions will understandably be favourites to complete a unique back-to-back in such an unprecedentedly short period. The Mid-Tipp side commence their title defence with a semi-final showdown against Limerick champions Newscastle West on home soil this Saturday at 1pm. Eoin Brennan takes a look at the Clare camogie finals taking place this weekend Senior Camogie Championship Final Truagh-Clonlara v Scariff-Ogonnelloe at Clarecastle, Saturday 2pm (Andy McMahon, Cratloe) Being only the third final since the turn of the Millennium that Newmarket-on-Fergus or Inagh-Kilnamona (Kilnamona) are not competing in, the sheer magnitude of what Truagh-Clonlara and Scariff-Ogonnelloe have achieved just to even tee up this unique final pairing is not lost on Clare Camogie supporters. Both have rebuilt their flagship sides from the bottom up and have concentrated on developing clear pathways from underage level as central to their revolutionary ways. Indeed, both cubs have had a similar trajectory, becoming almost ever-present in the last four line-up over the past few years. A dominant opening quarter laid the foundations for Scariff-Ogonnelloe to secure the first Minor silverware of 2021 as they held off any Kilmaley revolt to garner the Under 17 Academy B title in Hamilton Park in Kilkishen on Sunday morning. An early unanswered 1-6 blitz capped off by a John Walsh goal provided the amalgamation with a healthy cushion that they would cling to for the remainder as Kilmaley, led superbly by Thomas McGuire and Joe Casey, tried their utmost to grab a lifeline. Scariff-Ogonnelloe perhaps should have been out of sight by the opening water break though when only taking one of three glorious goal opportunities. Fronted by a potent forward line led by Sean Treacy, John Walsh, Liam Madden, Colin O’Grady and Mici Sheedy, the East Clare combo hit the ground running with six points without reply in the opening twelve minutes through Walsh (2), O’Grady (2), Madden and Sheedy. Senior Camogie Championship Semi-Finals Truagh-Clonlara v Kilkishen/Bodyke @ Fr. McNamara Park, Saturday 12pm (Noel Quinn, Gort) NOT many of the few souls that were scattered around the fencing in Fr. McNamara Park last September for the Senior B decider between the pair could have predicted a rematch at this lofty stage but it isn’t really that much of a surprise. After all, up to last year, Truagh-Clonlara were knocking on their door of a breakthrough to the McMahon Cup final, with a trio of semi-final battles with Newmarket all being edged by the Blues despite back-to-back bouts of extra-time in 2018 and ’19. However, it was Kilkishen/Bodyke who would take out Newmarket on Truagh’s behalf and it’s refreshening that a newcomer will line up in this year’s knock-out stages. There was little between the sides in last year’s Senior B final as Truagh-Clonlara trailed for over 45 minutes before springing to life late on capped off by an Aine O’Loughlin clinching …

Scariff-Ogonnelloe 3-14 Clooney-Quin 2-8 A blistering start that saw Scariff-Ogonnelloe fire 1-1 in the opening two minutes set the East Clare amalgamation up for victory in the Under 13B championship final against Clooney-Quin in Broadford. Goalscorer Oisin Madden was to go on to have an outstanding final scoring 1-6 in total, all of which impressively came from play. Indeed the whole spine of the winning team was excellent, keeping Clooney-Quin on the backfoot for most of the match. The first half saw Scariff-Ogonnelloe in the ascendancy with further points from Madden (5), Caimin Dinan and two placed balls from Paul Rodgers giving them a 1-9 to 0-4 half-time lead. A different Clooney-Quin team emerged for the second period and despite Madden again opening the scoring with a point, they started to claw back the deficit. TWO Scariff-Ogonnelloe players, Susan Vaughan and Mairéad Scanlan, have been selected on the 2019/2020 AIB All-Ireland Senior Club Championship Team of the Year. Scanlan was also selected as Munster player of the year. The team also features six players from All-Ireland champions Sarsfields from Galway, six players from Ulster Champions and All-Ireland Runners-Up Slaughtneil, along with one from St. Vincents of Dublin. One player from each province, were named as Provincial Players of the Year. Aoife Ní Chaiside of All-Ireland finalists Slaughtneil, Niamh Hetherton of Leinster and St. Vincents, Mairéad Scanlan from Munster champions Scariff-Ogonelloe and Siobhán McGrath of Connacht and Galway’s Sarsfields. The four players are now in the running for the prestigious AIB Camogie Club Player of the Year Award with the winner to be announced on AIB GAA social channels on Friday, April 3. SCARIFF-Ogonnelloe full-back Marian O’Brien started out the season taking charge of the strength and conditioning programme for the team. Having retired from competitive camogie three years ago, she had no intention of returning as a player. A community sports development officer by occupation, she ended up playing when the team was short of players. Now she’s goiong to line out in an All-Ireland final. “It’s great and I am loving it. I never thought we would be back in another All-Ireland final. We started in January with a focus on what we wanted to achieve. We have worked very hard; a massive commitment, which has brought us this far. We have a good fitness level and a good strength and conditioning level. We are now concentrating on our skill level ahead of the final,” she said. An All-Star nominee in 2013, O’Brien won senior shield, intermediate and league titles in 2013, All-Ireland Sevens in the same year and was part …
