County hurling champions Sixmilebridge or last year’s beaten finalists Kilmaley will be in the relegation play offs this season. That’s the big talking point amongst hurling fans this evening after they were drawn to face each other in round two of the championship. Both suffered defeat in the opening rounds two weeks ago when there were a number of surprise results. Whichever side loses will be one of four that will then battle it out to determine who will drop down to intermediate grade for next season. On a weekend when league action dominated the domestic GAA scene the pairings for the semi-finals of the Clare Champion cup (senior hurling league) were confirmed. Eire Og knew going into their clash with neighbours St. Josephs that they needed to win by seventeen points or more to claim a place in the last four. They came very close but their fifteen point winning margin wasn’t enough to see them through and that spot goes to Whitegate who finished second to Kilmaley. The three were level on 14 points each after nine games and it was left to score difference to separate them. Kilmaley had a vastly superior difference and claimed top spot. Crusheen sealed the runners up spot in division 1 A when they drew with Inagh-Kilnamona. Sixmilebridge were already through but they completed their programme games with their ninth win from nine outings when they overcame O’Callaghans Mills. The way is clear for the semi-finals of the division 3 and 4 hurling leagues following the final round of group games on Friday and Saturday evenings. A number of play off places in some of the football leagues have also been filled this weekend while the way is clear for the first league final of the season with Killimer through to play Kilmurry-Ibrickane in division 5 thanks to their eight point win over neighbours Kilrush on Friday evening. A one point win for Ml. Cusacks over St. Breckans has given the Carron based club a place in the division 6 league semi-final where they will play Kilmihil on Sunday next with the winners going through to play O’Currys in the final. Meanwhile, Corofin booked a place in the division 3 league play offs with a hard earned two point win over Lissycasey on Friday evening.
