The Clare Divisional Drugs unit have arrested two people after they seized cocaine with an estimated value of €70,000 in Birdhill County Tipperary. Two people have been arrested following the operation in County Tipperary  and follow up searches were also carried out at a house in Newmarket on Fergus where drug paraphernalia were discovered. As part of ongoing investigations targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs in the mid-west region, a car was stopped and searched by gardaí from the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit in Birdhill, County Tipperary on Thursday, November 30. During the search gardaí discovered cocaine with an estimated street value of €70,000 pending analysis. Further searches were carried out at a house in Newmarket-on-Fergus where drug paraphernalia including a weighing scales and packaging were discovered. A man in his 30s and woman in her 20s have been arrested and are currently detained at Shannon Garda station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act, …

TWO Galway women who were lucky to escape a car accident with their lives this time last year have issued a public thank you to all those involved in rescuing them. The women had to be cut from the wreckage of their car following a collision on the M18 motorway at Dromoland on January 4, 2016. Exactly a year to the date, the women are only returning to work for the first time after a long recovery and one woman continues to receive follow-up treatment. In the letter, the women, who do not wish to be named, state, “It was a miracle we survived. We are fortunate and able to express our gratitude and feel that the wonderful men and women who spend their lives saving others, often go unnoticed. Thanks to you all, we can write this letter.” They said this expression of gratitude and appreciation for the emergency services and the bystanders who remained with them and kept …

The  Archbishop of Cardiff George Stack, led tributes to Clare born nun, Sister Mairéad Noonan, at a special mass in Wales recently to celebrate the 50th year of her religious profession. A native of Moohane, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Sr Mairéad is attached to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy at LLantarnam Abbey, Cwmbran in South East Wales. The mass in Llantarnam Abbey  was attended by Sr Mairéad’s mother, Ellen and members of the Noonan family. A daughter of Ellen and the late Charles Noonan, Sr Mairéad attended Ballycar National Achool and Ennis Vocational School before becoming a member of the Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy in Llanternam Abbey. She then undertook teacher training in Newman College in the University of Birmingham after which she pursued a training course in psychotherapy .She is now an energy and  health practitioner in Llantarnam Abbey. Clare County Council consultants have completed investigations at Latoon Creek Bridge, which has been the subject of a weight restriction since late 2015. The local authority said it anticipates that repair work to the bridge, which is located between Newmarket-on-Fergus and Clarecastle on the old Ennis/Limerick road, will begin next month and will be completed during November. Tom Tiernan, senior engineer, Clare County Council explained, “Due to the complex nature of the construction of the bridge, specialist contractors with experience in investigation of similar structures conducted additional structural investigations, load assessments and sensitivity analysis. The result of their investigations, recently completed, is that the 3.5-tonne weight restriction can now be eased to 18 tonnes. This amended restriction, however, must remain in place until the repairs are carried out.” “The new restriction will be less onerous than that which has existed up to now,” he added. “From today (Monday) vehicles of up to 18 tonnes will be free to use the …

A garda manhunt is contuning this morning for a prisoner who escaped from Ennis courthouse yesterday afternoon. Jason Freyne, aged 22 from Carew Park in Limerick, remains at large. Gardai believe that Mr Freyne, who had appeared in court after being caught driving a stolen car, may have returned to his home county. A second man, Keith Garrihy of Beechgrove, Newmarket on Fergus, was who had also absconded from the courthouse was apprehended shortly afterwards by gardai in Clarecastle. The pair, who had been brought from Limerick prison, made their escape at 3.15pm from prison staff at Ennis courthouse. Chief Superintendent John Kerin told The Clare Champion that a full investigation is underway and that Clare gardai are working closely with their counterparts in Limerick to find Mr Freyne. “We believe that he may be attempting to return to Limerick and we are liaising with gardai in Limerick as part of this investigation,” he said. TWO young people and a 14-month-old baby are “lucky to be alive”, having had a narrow escape when they were involved in a single vehicle accident at Ballycar on Wednesday at approximately 1.40pm. Moments after their car left the road and overturned, smoke was seen coming from the car. Local garda Declan Fawl arrived at the scene to assist the trapped occupants, before the car became engulfed. He explained that the driver’s door handle had come off in the crash, so he came to their assistance to get the three occupants, including their baby, out through the back passenger doors. Garda Fawl said the car had hit the ditch and flipped onto the other side of the road. The crash was witnessed by another motorist and Garda Fawl just happened to be driving on the same road when the call came in. “I got them out through the back passenger door. The car was smoking and little flames were coming off it but then about two minutes later, it went up. It was nothing really major; they are just lucky to be alive really. They were worried …

2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the World War I and Clare’s first All-Ireland senior hurling triumph. These two diverse events have their own historical importance but an interaction between them is highlighted by the story of Newmarket hurler, John Fox. Fox featured at right half-back on the Clare team that defeated Laois by 5-1 to 1-0 in the 1914 All-Ireland final. A year later, he joined the British Army. He is the only Clare man to have won an All-Ireland senior hurling medal and to have fought in World War I. Fox later sold his cherished Celtic Cross. His All-Ireland medal was purchased by the late Kevin Keogh from Newmarket. When John Fox died in 1967, Mr Keogh generously returned the medal to the possession of the Fox family from Knocksaggart.
