‘It’s a results business…we need to win trophies now’

Avenue United manager David Russell doesn’t mince his words. He wants silverware, preferably both the Premier Division and Banner Carpets and Flooring Clare Cup. With his side coming up against Newmarket Celtic in an eagerly awaited Banner Carpets and Flooring Clare Cup final tomorrow, the possibility of a domestic double looms large for both these outfits. Avenue United lie two points clear of Newmarket Celtic in the Premier Division. The sides meet in the final game of the season next Wednesday with a draw enough to see Avenue crowned league champions. However, Newmarket Celtic are the current holders in both the league and cup as they will certainly be in no mood to give up either piece of silverware without a fight. Russell feels that his side need to win silverware if his current tenure in charge of the club is going to be regarded as a success. “I said I’d give it three years and see how things stand …

Avenue back at summit after appeal of Ennistymon result

Avenue United moved to the summit of the Maloney Hardware Premier Division following a successful objection to the eligibility of a Sporting Ennistymon player. An objection from Avenue Utd that a Sporting Ennistymon player didn’t have an International Transfer Certificate (ITC) was upheld by the CDSL at a virtual meeting on Monday. The FAI became involved in this contentious matter. As a result of their successful objection, Avenue Utd get two extra points having drawn 1-1 with Sporting last month. The additional points move them to the top of the Premier Division, one ahead of holders Newmarket Celtic. Mountshannon Celtic lost 2-1 to Sporting Ennistymon as they were the first club to bring this issue to attention. They successfully appealed the result and were awarded all three points by the Munster FA. Ennis Town FC were also awarded two points having drawn with Sporting 3-3 last month. In a tense extra time, Newmarket Celtic held their nerve as Adam Cusack struck the all important goal to help the home side power through to the quarter finals. It was tough luck on a Letterkenny side that proved difficult opposition but Newmarket found the quality needed to prevail. Newmarket well prepared for Janesboro

These are good times for Clare soccer according to Newmarket Celtic manager Liam Murphy, who is hoping to add further success when he leads Newmarket Celtic to Limerick for their Munster Junior Cup semi-final game against Janesboro on Sunday at 12 noon. Murphy notes Newmarket’s opponents will carry the favourites’ tag. “We are the underdogs. We are not stupid enough to think otherwise. They are about to retain the premiership in Limerick, something they have never done. They are trying to add a Munster Junior Cup to that and they are a force to be reckoned with. We have our work cut out to try and contain them and impose our game plan on them,” he told The Clare Champion. Newmarket met Janesboro at the same stage in this competition back in 2016, before losing out to St Michael’s in the final. That year, Janesboro defeated Newmarket in the FAI Junior Cup. Newmarket face tough challenge against Pike Rovers

Newmarket Celtic’s FAI Junior Cup semi-final date with Pike Rovers on Sunday is “a big one”, according to team manager Liam Murphy. It’s the first time the Clare club has reached this stage of this prestigious competition and they are determined to keep their winning run going. Newmarket have been in sparkling form all season and remain in the hunt for all five titles for which they are competing. Ahead of Sunday’s game at 2pm in the Pike Rovers complex in Limerick, the Clare side have concerns about the fitness of Seamie Lawlor. He was injured in their win over St Michael’s two weeks ago and didn’t train or play last week. “We know we are facing a huge task against a team that are the current Munster champions. They have one of the best coaches in Munster in Mick Shiels and we will have our work cut out if we are to progress,” Newmarket manager Murphy told the Clare …

Newmarket bid for six in-a-row

CUP final day is always a special occasion in Clare. Adding to the excitement ahead of this Sunday’s Clare Junior Cup final is the fact that holders Newmarket Celtic are not just seeking to retain the title but to be crowned cup champions for a record sixth year in-a-row. Standing between them and that achievement are their neighbours and great rivals Bridge United, who have some close to beating them on a number of occasions in recent years only to come up short on most of those occasions. Two years ago, these clubs met in the cup final, when many of those who will line out this week were in opposition. Last year, Bridge United put in a massive effort to win the Premier League title, only to be pipped on the final day by Newmarket, who were retaining the title. This year, Newmarket lost out on final day, when they went down to Shannon Town, having led by two …
